Muttersberg Tours

This historic hotel is located in the heart of Appenzell and has a lovely restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. It is a short walk from the train station, is clean and charming and rooms have comfortable beds and bedding. The included breakfast is plentiful and delicious with good coffee :) The staff were incredibly kind and accommodating - when we had to check out very early at the end of our stay, they packed us a delicious lunch to take with us on the train the night before we left since we would miss the morning breakfast. Travellers should note that there is no AC due to preservation rules for all hotels/historic buildings in Appenzell - when we came there was a heat wave so it was unusually hot, but we opened our windows at night and it cooled our room off enough so we could sleep. We highly recommend Gasthaus Hof!

Self check in was a bit tricky- one of our reservations easily came up on the computer, but the other didn't (we had 2 rooms). However, a call to the number located on check in and the person on the other end quickly got it sorted and checked us in. The location was BEAUTIFUL, with mountains around us, a waterfall next door and Brown Swiss cows with their cowbells on the hill outside our windows. Our rooms were amazing- complete with kitchens, dining room and living room, by far the best rooms in our stay in Switzerland! Laundry was available, but it was our first stop so we didn't need it. The location made it easiest to have a rental car (we did) but there is a postbus that stops there (not sure how often). There is a nice grocery store in Urnasch a few minutes drive away. We really loved the hiking and sight seeing in this area!
