While in Osaka, be sure to visit Minami, a dynamic downtown neighborhood with superb culinary, entertainment and retail attractions. This lively area incorporates the bustling districts of Namba and Shinsaibashi. Mingle with Osakans enjoying fun times at Minami’s dumpling bars, markets, nightclubs, theaters and video arcades.
Dotonbori Canal flows through the neighborhood with the bars, clubs and restaurants of the Dotonbori nightlife zone on either side. Experience the ambiance and enjoy views along the canal while strolling the Tombori River Walk. Sample and make your own takoyaki octopus dumplings at the Dotonbori Konamon Museum.
Dotonbori is a spectacular sight at night, when neon-illuminated buildings and billboards reflect in the canal’s waters. Admire the scene and watch passenger ferries pass by from Ebisu Bridge. This a great vantage point for viewing Osaka’s emblematic Dotonbori Glico Sign and the Kani Doraku crab sign.
North of the canal, Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade has dozens of Japanese and global fashion labels inside a 2,000-foot (600-meter) covered walkway. Follow side lanes to boutiques, bric-a-brac stores and low-key sushi bars. A youthful, fashion-conscious crowd gathers on the streets of American Village. Snack on okonomiyaki pancakes, browse galleries, purchase vintage garments and play retro games at Video Game Bar Space Station.
Busy alleys lead from the southern bank of the canal to Hozenji-Yokocho Alley. This cobbled lane is home to diners and saloon-style izakaya pubs set inside traditional wooden houses. While in this area don’t miss Hozenji Temple, revered for its statue of the Buddhist deity Fudomyoo. Discover the art of woodblock printing at the Kamigata Ukiyo-e Museum.
Plan a visit to the Namba Parks mall for contemporary brandname shopping and an airy rooftop garden. Feast on street food and shop for souvenirs at Kuromon Ichiba Market. Namba Grand Kagetsu Theater puts on Japanese vaudeville shows and Namba Hatch is a venue for blues, jazz, rock and soul concerts.
Centrally located, Minami is easy to travel to via Osaka’s fast and reliable train and subway network. With attractions at every corner, this is a neighborhood best explored on foot.
