The best area to stay in Perak for most travelers is Ipoh, specifically the Old Town and New Town areas, which serve as the state's capital and main urban center.

Ipoh Old Town is characterized by its historic-era architecture, narrow streets, and famous mural art. Many of the city's iconic white coffee shops, like those around Concubine Lane, are found here. It's an excellent choice for couples and solo travelers interested in exploring the city's heritage and culinary scene on foot. The area has a relaxed pace during the day, becoming more active in the evenings.

Ipoh New Town offers a more contemporary experience with modern hotels, shopping malls, and a wider variety of dining options. It's just a short walk across the Kinta River from Old Town, making it convenient for accessing both historical sites and newer amenities. Families might appreciate the larger hotel options and proximity to family-friendly attractions like the Ipoh Parade shopping center.

For those seeking a nature-focused retreat, the areas surrounding the limestone hills of Ipoh, particularly near Tambun, offer resorts and hotels with direct access to hot springs and cave temples.

The best time to visit Perak is during the dry season, which runs from March to June and again from September to October. These months generally offer less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for exploring the region's attractions.

While Perak experiences a tropical climate year-round, characterized by consistent temperatures and high humidity, avoiding the heaviest monsoon rains is key for a comfortable trip. The shoulder months within the dry season often provide pleasant weather with fewer crowds.

For travelers interested in outdoor activities like exploring limestone caves or visiting tea plantations, these drier periods ensure better conditions.
