The Phoenix Mountain Preserve is a group of large, arid parks packed with spectacular mountains overlooking Scottsdale and Phoenix. Numerous nature trails meander up to the peaks, providing utter serenity in the center of the Arizona desert. Enjoy the spectacular undulating scenery that has made parts of the park a Phoenix Point of Pride.
Notice how the mountains appear to rise quite suddenly above the flat terrain of Phoenix’s city center. Follow a nature trail and set up a meal at one of the picnic areas. Go horseback riding from one of the surrounding stables to trot up to the mountain ridges in style.
The preserve includes several parks. Enter the Piestewa Peak recreation area and gaze up at its namesake mountain, which rises to 2,608 feet (795 meters). This is the second highest in the Phoenix Mountains, after Camelback Mountain. Note that the mountain is named for Lori Ann Piestewa, the first Native American female soldier of the U.S. Army to die in combat. If you’re an experienced hiker, follow the challenging Summit Trail to the top, where you’ll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of the city below.
For a less challenging hike, make your way along the Freedom Trail of the Dreamy Draw Recreation Area. Enjoy desert vistas from the Quartz Ridge Trail. Feel the tranquility in the Lookout and Shadow Mountain area, which is known for its scenic views. Climb up Shaw Butte and snap photos of your family members beside enormous cacti for a sense of the plants’ scale.
Find the Phoenix Mountain Preserve in the northern neighborhoods of Phoenix and Scottsdale. From the former, drive north for 10 miles (16 kilometers) to reach the preserve. Travel through the area to see surrounding attractions such as the Paradise Valley Country Club, the Orange Tree Golf Club and North Mountain Park.
