As the name suggests, Town Beach is a short stroll from Port Macquarie’s main streets. Along with the soft, golden sand and deep blue water, playgrounds and picnic areas ensure appeal for everyone. Choose your favorite spot and settle in for surfing, swimming and dining by the sea.
Framed by a dramatic headland, Town Beach is a top spot for surfers seeking protection from the wind. Try the Flagstaff section at the southeastern end for thrilling waves. The beach is patrolled for most of the year for safe swimming. Off the water, let the kids enjoy a colorful playground or nearby skate park while you work out on outdoor gym equipment.
Take photos of the Town Beach breakwall, with rocks decorated by graffiti. What began as an art competition now features all kinds of art that’s constantly enriched. Walk along the breakwall to admire these colorful installations, watching for dolphins where the Hastings River flows into the port leading to the ocean. Arrive here before sunrise or sunset for the best photos.
The breakwall is also the starting point for the renowned Port Macquarie Coastal Walk, which leads to the historic Tacking Point Lighthouse at the tip of Lighthouse Beach. Set out on the 6-mile (9-kilometer) adventure, stopping along the way at beautiful beaches and panoramic viewpoints. It’s often possible to spot migrating whales from May to November each year.
When it’s time to eat, spread out on the open grassy areas under shady trees for picnics. You’ll also find covered picnic tables and grills. Watch boats as they come into the water sheltered by the breakwall as people fish along the rocks. Alternatively, head to the beach kiosk for meals with ocean views or stroll into the center of town for more options. In town, visit the Port Macquarie Museum to view themed exhibits and galleries explaining the town’s history from British settlement as a penal colony in 1821.
Town Beach is near the heart of Port Macquarie, with facilities including restrooms, picnic areas and shops nearby. Use the available free car parking or ride a bike here.
