It was a great place to stay for our preparations for our hike at Philmont.

We arrived and housekeeper was at the property even though it was two hours after check in. The house smelled of skunk and when I asked if previous guest had been smoking, she informed me that wasn’t the case but that they were dealing with a skunk staying under the house.(not surprising since crawl door was laying in the yard) The smell was almost unbearable, especially after dark. Though bad this wasn’t the worst issue. The cabin was infested with mice and rats. There were traps, bait stations, and buckets of rat bait throughout the house including the kitchen. The drawers , dishes and shelves all had droppings on them. We dropped the truck keys in the couch cushion and had to retrieve them and the mouse droppings were 1/4 “ deep under the cushion. The place lacks any sense of safety or cleanliness. The outside is in disarray and there is a truck in the driveway in which they deposit bags of garbage from previous guest. I understand that there will be rodent issues from time to time but they must be taken care of before they get out of hand. We awoke on the second night to a rat dragging a family size bag of popcorn behind the couch. The pictures are in no way representative of the cabin, some for the better and some for the worse. Before it’s said we left the property and u sent the owner a message letting him know, I brought none of this up to him because all issues are obviou. Considering New Mexico has the worse reports of hantavirus cases, this house should be avoided.
I have stayed in log cabins before, real log cabins not prefab stuff so I know what a pain they can be maintenance wise. the logs twist and turn, its just what happens. we had more than a few drafts, but the heaters kept us warm. everyone slept well in the beds. the pond behind this place is an awesome sight in morning. it had a bunch of Canadian geese and ducks on it every morning. I took my kids and my grand kids skiing at Sipapu, they had a blast. drove up to Eagle nest in a pretty good snow storm, loved the drive through the mountains. usually run into some big elk herds, but not this trip. saw lots of deer and other wildlife.
if your looking for a rustic place in the middle of nowhere I highly recommend it. only real complaint is I did not know about the cows. I am afraid I would have left the gate open if my daughter had not told me about them.
