![Beautiful deep sandstone canyon just half an hour from the college town of Carbondale (Southern Illinois University).  Offers great hiking, interesting geology, and diverse biology.  

Be cautious where you step, three venomous snakes are native to southern Illinois and this area in particular, including water moccasin, copperheads, and eastern timber rattlesnake.  However, encounters are infrequent.  No camping allowed nowadays, but back in the day it was a great place to spend the weekend.

Keith and Fred were very welcoming and we enjoyed talking with Fred and learning that all the woodwork was crafted by his sons, which is truly beautiful! The home was clean, comfortable and had everything you could possibly want or need. It was nice and private and we saw deer each morning and evening.
