Things to do in Barra

Costa Nova Beach is a vast expanse of clean, soft sand hemmed in on one side by sand dunes and on the other side by the Atlantic Ocean. Spend a day stretched out on the sands, soaking up the relaxing atmosphere. For something more active, select from a range of water sports including sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing.

The nearest beach to Aveiro city, Barra Beach is a wide and frequently windy stretch of pale sandy shoreline. Observe fishermen casting their rods from the piers and rocks, and stroll barefoot on the soft golden sand. Depending on the conditions, swim or try wind-powered water sports.

Visit Aveiro Cathedral (Śe de Aveiro) to see one of the most important and architecturally impressive churches in the city of Aveiro. Marvel at the striking Baroque features of the façade and browse artwork that adorns a collection of side chapels. Parts of Aveiro Cathedral date back to the 1400s, when it was part of a Dominican convent. It was rebuilt in 1835 following a fire that destroyed the convent one year before.

The tree-lined Praça da Republica is at the heart of city life in Aveiro. It’s likely you’ll pass through it at some point during your visit to the city. With so much to see, it’s best to stay and view the imposing City Hall, inspect the tiled façade of the Misericórdia Church and find a spot on a bench to sit back and people-watch.

Housed inside an old and beautifully preserved Dominican convent, the Museu de Aveiro houses a collection that includes paintings, sculptures, tiles and jewels.
