Winster is a well-preserved Derbyshire village west of Matlock. The vantage point of this composite photo is The Flat at the top of the lower branch of East Bank. It's just southwest of the Old Lead Mines near the centre of this 1899 map. Until the Leacroft Road estate was built in the mid 20th century, Winster comprised the three roads shown in the 1899 map. The most important, Main Street, is in the north of the village and runs east/west. South of Main Street the land rises towards the high ground known as Winster Bank. Two roads that lead south from Main Street and towards the Bank are known as West Bank and East Bank. This shot looks north so West Bank is to the left and East Bank is to the right. About half way up the hill, East Bank divides into two with one branch leading southwest and ending up as The Flat – the point from which this photo was taken. The other branch initially leads southeast but soon swings right and continues in a westerly direction until it joins West Bank at the point marked as Winster Bank on the map. The places that I've identified in notes include the tower of St John the Baptist's Church, Birchover Wood, the Dower House, West Bank House, Winster Hall, the Burton Institute and the former Tallow Factory.

Winster is a Derbyshire village west of Matlock. Many of my ancestors were baptised, married or buried in the churchyard there. Their surnames include Wagstaff, Roose, Holmes, Mettam, Staley and Roberts. The Roberts family grave is not readily visible. It's beind the trunk of the tree in the centre of the photo. The shot was taken on a dull day in early April, 2006 and has been highly enhanced. There are better shots of the church elsewhere in my Winster set. Robert Cutts, son of Hilda Cutts née Roberts.
