Delhi showing heritage architecture and a castle
Beautiful temples, vibrant street markets, ancient monuments and manicured gardens make this an exciting city of contrasts.

New Delhi, the energetic capital of India, is known for bustling bazaars, tree-lined boulevards, and historic temples and mosques. Whether you are seeking a spiritual retreat or a thriving metropolis, this city has something to offer every visitor. Destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout its turbulent past, you’ll find a variety of architectural styles that illustrate a rich history. Visit Qutab Minar to see an example of New Delhi’s mixed heritage. This marble and sandstone minaret represents the beginning of Muslim rule in India. A short rickshaw ride away is the Presidential Palace (Rashtrapati Bhavan), where you can see the contrasting British and Indian architecture that is typical of much of New Delhi. Stroll along Rajpath (King's Way) to see the India Gate, India’s national monument.

Explore the city’s Mughal Gardens, with their Persian-style design. Humayun’s Tomb is a classic example of Mughal landscaping, with square lawns and narrow waterways representing the rivers of Islamic paradise.

Discover New Delhi’s many religious buildings, which represent a range of spiritual traditions. Visit the flower-shaped Lotus Temple celebrating the Bahá’í faith. Head to the Hindu ISKCON Temple, where you can meditate and enjoy a meal at the vegetarian restaurant. Learn about Indian heritage and spirituality at Swaminarayan Akshardham, one of the world’s largest Hindu temples. On the other side of the city, carvings on the exterior of the Birla Mandir Temple depict scenes from Hindu mythology. Visit the nearby Jama Masjid mosque.

Explore the city’s commercial hub, Connaught Place, where you will find markets, stores, restaurants and cafés. Experience the excitement of Chandni Chowk, one of the city’s oldest and most popular wholesale markets. Shop for jewelry, furniture and clothing, and bargain with shopkeepers. Enjoy the fragrant spice market and taste local delicacies.

Located in northern India, New Delhi experiences mild temperatures year-round, with June being the hottest month. The monsoon season lasts from July through September. Getting around is easy with the city’s extensive public transportation system. New Delhi has two airports, making it the perfect gateway to the rest of India.

Getting around Delhi

Delhi’s a huge and often bewildering city, so it pays to know a few methods of getting around. The Delhi Metro is a modern and efficient subway system which connects most of the city, although it can get extremely busy at rush hour. Autorickshaw is the iconic mode of Delhi transportation and is quicker and cheaper than taxis. Old-fashioned cycle rickshaws are slower, but can offer a relaxing ride. Visit the The Regional Transport Office website.Browse Delhi rental cars.

Best time to visit

The weather can be extreme in Delhi, meaning when you visit will have a big impact on your experience. Between June and August the city is hit by the monsoon season, which brings torrential rains, extreme heat and humidity. Between October and March is the best time to visit the city, as temperatures are pleasant and the parks are in bloom; January can be cold, though.

Lots to see. Review online points about how much to tip and how much to pay for cabs, auto-rickshaws, etc. Most see Western and jump the price way up. Average tip for rickshaw rides is 10-30 rupees. One demanded 1500 for a tip. NOT
