You don’t even have to leave town to visit the Bad Gastein Waterfall. This remarkable set of cascades bounds down the river that runs through the center of this quaint town. Its multiple tiers let the water of the Gasteiner Ache river rush along ripples of rock between the trees, creating a wonderful image in the historic center. Stroll along the shores of the tumultuous waterway and listen to its constant crashing water around the spa town.
Chat with locals to hear about the alleged therapeutic properties of the water, which is used in the various spas scattered across the town. It has been known for its waters since the 1400s. Admire the belle époque design of the mansions and houses lining the sides of the falls, with the town surrounded by mountains covered in forests.
Note that the cascades are split into three parts. For the best vistas of the Middle Waterfall, walk onto the Wasserfallbrücke bridge. Ascend the set of steps to reach a vantage point providing higher views of the falls. Adorning the sides of the ferocious river are deluxe spas making use of its water. Admire the majestic façade of the Church of Sts. Primus and Felizian.
Stop for snacks and hot drinks at one of the cafés and restaurants overlooking the waterway. Hike along the sides of the cascades to reach the Lower Waterfall and Higher Waterfall areas.
The Bad Gastein Waterfall flows through the center of Bad Gastein, a town located a little west of central Austria. Arrive in Salzburg and drive south for 65 miles (105 kilometers) to travel here in 1 to 2 hours. Ride the train to the Bad Gastein Bahnhof and get around the area by bus. While you’re in the town, stop at nearby sites including the Hunting Archery Course, the Hotel Mirabell Schwaigerhaus and the Hotel Badeschloss.
