Try savory green onion pancakes in a scenic area whose museums and forts reveal a rich military and cultural history.

The Dongnae District is a picturesque zone surrounded by the green mountains of southeastern South Korea. A former city in its own right, it is now an integral part of Busan’s culture and history. While visiting Dongnae District be sure to try various restaurants serving traditional Korean specialties, such as pajeon, which is best described as green onion pancakes.

Watch a game at the Sajik Baseball Stadium, where the Lotte Giants play. This is one of the most iconic arenas in Korean baseball, with a seating capacity of nearly 27,000. Visit the shops and cafés in and around the stadium.

Get a glimpse into the region’s past in Dongnae Historical Park. Marking the grounds is an array of sacred tombs and statues, with the Dongnaeeupseong Fortress among the highlights. The fort dates back to the 11th century and was partly demolished in 1910 at the hands of Japanese rulers. Climb to the grassy knoll at the top of the park and enjoy a picnic with a stunning view of the rest of the district.

Just to the south of Dongnaeeupseong Fortress more history awaits at Chungnyeolsa, a shrine that honors fighters who died in the 16th-century Japanese invasion of Korea.

Visit the Jang Yeong-sil Science Garden to see models of the former king’s scientific equipment. Study the old military weapons and armor on display in the Bokcheon Museum. Its many artifacts were excavated from the Bokcheon-dong burial ground. Learn about local student life with a trip to the campus of the Seoul National University of Education.

Rest feet weary from sightseeing at the Heosimcheong Spa, among the largest hot-spring spas in the country. Pick up traditional street food at the adjacent Oncheon Traditional Market at the northern end of the zone.

Dongnae District covers a large area in the northeastern outskirts of Busan. Ride buses to any of the many stops spread across the zone or travel around by taxi. While here, consider visiting neighboring such regions as the Gangseo District, Geumjeong and Nam-gu.
