Consider the intriguing story behind the castle, whose name references Queen Mary. In 1857, King George V planned to build it to celebrate her 39th birthday. The last king of Hannover, King George V was forced into exile by the Prussians in 1866. The castle couldn’t be completed. Hear about how the great-great-great grandson took ownership of it in 2004 and restored it to its current glory.
Note that the castle opening hours and days vary year round. In summer, the castle is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon, while it closes for a winter break during the year-end holiday season. There is a fee for admission and a castle tour ask for discounts for children and groups. Children under age 5 can enter for free. Available in the summer, the tower climb has an added fee.
