A short drive from the spectacular Karangahake Gorge, Owharoa Falls consists of a set of scenic tiered cascades. Enjoy a picnic in this serene spot. The first and third waterfalls are easily accessible and visible, while the middle falls is a little more secluded and harder to reach. Walk up the steps from the parking lot for a few minutes to reach the initial waterfall.
Watch locals diving into the water basin at the foot of the waterfall, a popular swimming spot. Watch for slippery surfaces and unexpected deep holes and currents in the water. Take photos of the impressive chute of water as it crashes down into the pool. A restaurant beside the falls is an idyllic rest spot to re-energize before exploring the surrounding terrain. Continue along the Taieri Stream, listening to the soft rush of water, as you approach the next waterfall.
Rent a mountain bike to cycle up and down the hills of this picturesque topography. The Hauraki Rail Trail takes about five days to ride, beginning in Kaiaua and continuing all the way to Matamata. Alternatively, follow the trail from Paeroa to Waihi, which stretches across 15 miles (25 kilometers) of scenic terrain.
The area has another pair of waterfalls farther down the Taieri Stream. Note that because of the steps, the falls are not accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
Owharoa Falls is on the southern side of the Ohinemuri River, in the village of Waikino. Drive south from Auckland for 80 miles (130 kilometers) to reach the Karangahake Gorge, where you’ll find this set of three waterfalls. Leave your vehicle in the parking lot beside the bridge. While in the region, make sure to visit neighboring attractions such as the Waikino Memorial Bridge, the Victoria Battery Tramway & Museum and the Hauraki Rail Trail.
