Beautiful converted barn, sleeps up to 16, private pool and close to river beach

Nestled in the woodlands of forgotten France, where deer, pheasants and boar still roam free, set in two acres of land, La Grange de Chatelus is a huge 430 sqm converted barn. The barn is over a century old with tumbling grapes and fig trees covering the granite stones. Set over three floors you will find everything you need for the perfect getaway. Here you will have the chance to rediscover what life is really all about.

On the entrance level you will find a spacious reception area and a sun-filled games room with a full-size table tennis table, dart board, games consoles, satellite TV and log burner. Double doors opening out onto the front gardens where you will find an ancient walnut tree and plenty of shade to read, rest or play. Also on this entrance level you will find a fully equipped laundry room with washing machine, tumble drier and plenty of space to air those swimming costumes and towels. Stairs from the entrance hall lead up into the impressive lounge area, which includes a pool table, black baby grand piano, chess/card playing table, 3 large (4 seater) sofas and a log burner. Here, large double patio doors open out onto a lawned area to the back. From here the woodland path weaves it's way through the Douglas fir trees, providing welcome shade from the summer heat. On this level you will be able to dine with friends and family on the bespoke banqueting table in the large kitchen/diner or snuggle down to watch a movie in the cosy cinema/library room. A door from the kitchen leads you into the perfect family suite. With a beautiful sleigh Boori cot bed/sofa, bunk beds, super-king zip and link bed, ensuite with roll-top bath, and large log burner, this is the largest and most versatile of the six bedrooms.

The stairs from the lounge lead up to 5 more ensuite bedrooms. The master suite also has a large walk-in wardrobe, sofa bed with trundle, plus a comfy single chair.

Each of the bedrooms has a large, comfortable zip and link super-king bed so they can be set up as twins or double rooms at your request. All of the bedding is made from 100% pure Egyptian cotton and the towels are large, soft and fluffy!

The water in this hamlet is sourced from a nearby well (a fresh water spring) and is therefore safe, pure and delicious to drink!

By the pool there is a large dining area under gazebo shade, rattan sun beds with umbrella shade, a sofa area as well as a couple of bistro tables dotted around.

You'll have to be very quiet or take an early morning or afternoon stroll along one of the many woodland walks, if you would like to spot the deer or many birds that fill these beautiful woods. You will often hear the the cries of the spectacular red kites as they circle overhead with their huge 6 foot wing span. Hear the rustling and loud cackle of the pheasants as the they wander through the undergrowth near the barn.

La Grange de Chatelus is situated in the Natura 2000 protected wildlife sanctuary. There are protected bats and wild orchids nearby as well as otters and other wildlife. La Grange is set in a tranquil hamlet, it is quiet but not too isolated. The small village of Chatelus, which lies on the famous pilgrimage path of the Way of St. James, is a 10 minute stroll away. Here, you will find a little post office and the local bar selling bread and essentials that you may need during your stay. You can order your bread and treat yourself to a nice cold beer in the process. A four minute drive or a fifteen minute, hilly mountain bike ride will find you at Le Thaurion, a pretty, winding river, leading to a great dam. At the river you will find a small beach and supervised bathing in a cordoned off area, with a life guard during the summer season. Relax here with a cool beer, or hire a canoe or pedalo to explore this picturesque river. Dive into the cool waters from the jetty or find a quiet spot down river to sit quietly and fish.

Every season here is breathtakingly beautiful. The colours of the trees in the autumn, around the barn and particularly by the river, are quite spectacular. Walk the dogs or take a stroll along the banks to really discover a slower pace of life.

Here, deep in the heart of France, find a place to escape the rush of life, slow down and take the time to appreciate the natural beauty of this stunning country. The summers here are warm and hazy, but you'll long for a huge thunderstorm so that you can snuggle inside La Grange with your book, watch one of the many DVDs or play games with loved ones.

HISTORY OF THE BARN:
In 1850 the barn was started, intended for use on a working farm. According to the neighbour, who is the grandson of the farmer at the time, it took 50 years to finish. In Jan 2003 it was converted into a huge habitable space. The present owners bought the barn in 2015 fulfilling a ten year dream to buy a home France.

Wonderful stay, beautiful house
What a such a wonderful week at La Grange de Chatelus! We were three families (six adults, eight children) and we stayed for a week during August. The house is stunning, huge rooms, comfortable beds, amazing ensuites to all the bedrooms, multiple washing machines, tumble dryers and even two dishwashers. The kids loved the swimming pool, cinema room and pool table. Richard and Sisca were great hosts, they quickly replied to our messages and the lady who checked us in was very helpful. We had a great afternoon by the river down the road, we hired a boat and canoes which was lots of fun! The house is quite remote with a drive to supermarkets and towns but this was perfect for us. Thanks for a brilliant stay!

Great outside space
Lovely peaceful location. Great pool and outside eating area. Cinema room was brilliant for the children, they loved the woods and the river beach and had a great time building a den and fishing. Kitchen well equipped and there were 2 big BBQ’s that we used nearly everyday. The hosts kept in touch to make sure everything was ok and we could contact them if needed.

Family and Friends Holiday
The property is in a real nice, quiet location. Most of the group stayed in and around the property all week and the children spent lots of time in the pool. Aside from a bit of miscommunicaitons on arrival it was ideal and we would look to book again in the future.

Quality family time 6th~20th Aug 2022
Beautiful house and superb location for those of you that are in much need of a well earned rest. The facilities meant that the young ones had plenty to do whether it were watching films in the cinema room, playing pool, table tennis and the abundance of toys and games. Beautiful walks in the woods with our dog that we’re plentiful and all off road. Would definitely recommend

Lovely stay apart from the pool problems
Pros - The house is fantastic for a large group. It has a well equipped kitchen, great living room and lots of facilities - the pool table was much loved. The bedrooms are all comfortable, each their own en-suite. The BBQ was much used and there is a lovely outside seating area. Cons - the pool was not working for a number of days. The owner lives in the UK and does not have somebody monitoring the pool locally. Managing a pool from another country seems to be a recipe for disaster. Judging from the visitor book and some previous reviews this does not seem to have been the first time the pool has caused problems.

Beautiful Location for a Relaxing Break
This beautiful converted barn sits deep in the French countryside. It had everything we needed for a relaxing stay with the family. The heated swimming pool was the favourite with the children. The host was attentive and kept in touch to make sure everything was right. We visited Limoges and the Lakes and the local towns. Amazed at the lack of traffic on the roads. you could drive for miles without seeing another car. This was a perfect place for our family break. Can't think of any negatives, unless you are looking for some night life. We certainly were not.

Great house in lovely area
Big, well-equipped house with big rooms and huge beds! We stayed during the recent heatwave (11 adults and a dog) and had a lovely time. Thank goodness for the lovely pool (with very pretty natural surround) and the cool basement. Sadly we had no pianist to make use of the piano but did use the ice maker, Nespresso machine, bread maker and Nutribullet (but not the slow cooker!) We also got good use from the pool table, and also had the opportunity of darts, table football and table tennis. We used the cinema room which was very cool. There was adequate seating for eating inside and out (with shade) and lots of room around the property to skulk in the shade. Shaded walks on green lanes are a short walk from the house - turn right and up the road - good for our dog in the heat . Also access to the river by walking down through the village. - or a short drive. We hired bikes from www.bikehiredirect.com who were v helpful and enjoyed undulating and traffic-free local roads and off-road tracks - and a pression in the Auberge in the village before coming back up the hill (also their bread, croissants etc). The area may have had less big towns and landmarks than some we’ve visited and therefore perhaps not ideal for all, particularly if weather was less favourable - and big supermarkets were a bit further afield, but was very pretty and quiet - crickets and bird song - with friendly locals and obvious civic pride. Only feedback would be that the addition of an extra (or double sink) in the kitchen at some point would make food prep and hand washing-up easier for a big group; hooks or rails to hang towels in the bathrooms and perhaps additional sun shade or umbrella round the pool (although an extra one was quickly obtained during our stay which we were very grateful for. There are plans to potentially develop the one remaining unused basement room (gym would be great and in the cool) and also to add showers to more rooms. (Steps down the side of the house would make dining outside less strenuous - but we coped (!) and enjoyed several BBQs and other meals there.) The fridge in the pool plant room was well used for cool beers! Special mention to Richard (and some lovely local helpers) who helped sort out a couple of issues which arose during our stay - none his fault. Communication was excellent and everything resolved. I would certainly return, and know the owners will have a lovely time when they return soon. Great getaway.

A children’s paradise!
We were a family party of 13 so had plenty of space in the house. We especially liked the cinema room (the kids amongst us really loved this room) which was a great feature and something we’d never had in a rental property before. Outside, the pool area was lovely and Richard did a great job keeping the pool temperature high for us as promised. The garden was great for the kids and the dining table and shade near the pool was very well thought out. A fridge by the pool was also a nice touch as was the new gas-fired bbq which we used extensively. No problems with either midges or bees (and there were plenty of the latter but they spent their time on the lavender bushes that had been carefully placed near the pool and dining table to create a suitable diversion!). We therefore ate outside most days and we were in the pool most evenings until late. We did have a few hiccups with the house but Richard did his best to sort these for us. Most of these we did get resolved but we did lose heating in the pool for the last couple of days as Richard was unable to source the correct filtration pump before we left. Having said that, he was very good at keeping us up to date with what was happening and he did his best to resolve a difficult situation. Inside, the house is well fitted out and we enjoyed the odd tickle on the ivories! The only improvement we would recommend if it could be accommodated is to increase the numberof showers in the house. Plenty of baths but only one stand alone shower which, as there was a queue for it, regularly ran out of hot water until Joe the plumber showed us how to operate the boost to the heating system! The house is in a very quiet area with some lovely walks and the local village river beach was thoroughly enjoyed by the kids, although when it came to some of the kids jumping off the road bridge that crossed the river into the water below it caused a few butterflies in the adults amongst us even though the locals showed us how to do it!q Overall, we had a lovely holiday and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. If you are looking for a quiet away from it all location this is perfect. And the house is far enough away from the adjoining properties for you to let the kids make plenty of noise without the fear of upsetting the neighbours!

Wonderful, peaceful holiday property
We all had a lovely holiday, staying at this beautiful, spacious property. The pool is fantastic and we hardly felt the need to leave the property as the children entertained themselves and it is perfect for relaxing, being so tranquil. The nearby river beach was fun too. The owner was very attentive when needed and provided helpful tips about the area. We’d love to come back!
