Spend a day appreciating nature amid the hilly and forested landscape of Kaguraoka Park. Set on the left bank of the Chungbetsu River, Kaguraoka Park was established in the early 1900s with the planting of a thousand trees. Today it is one of the best places in Asahikawa to admire cherry blossom trees and spot several species of forest wildlife. Enjoy picnics on the lawns, browse varied plant types at a botanical garden and visit a Shinto shrine.
With a network of meandering tree-lined pathways, this is a popular location for relaxed walks. Make your way to the center of the park to discover wooden boardwalks which cross a pond and offer views of a small waterfall. Watch as squirrels search for food in the fallen foliage, listen to the sound of birdsong and spot free-roaming foxes. Kids can have fun at the traditional playground games.
Early to mid-May is a great time to visit the park, when the pretty light-pink flowers of the cherry blossom trees are in full bloom. Elms, narra and oak are among other tree species, which all contribute to a spectacular display of gold, orange, red and yellow hues in fall. Strap on a pair of snowshoes and tramp through the soft snow in winter.
Plant lovers can also visit the Asahikawa City Green Center botanical garden to study examples of exotic plants at indoor and outdoor displays. Get educated on botanical topics at the frequently held workshops. Don’t miss the Kamikawa Shrine, a peaceful Shinto temple set on a hillside. Gateways, pavilions and statues of mythical animals decorate the shrine’s courtyard.
Kaguraoka Park sits to the south of central Asahikawa, about a 25-minute walk from the city’s railway terminal. Drivers can park for free in the large lot accessible from the park’s north entrance. Overnight camping is also possible with your own equipment.
