Embark on a day of thrilling outdoor adventures among the forests, rivers and mountainous areas of this vast protected region.

Taroko National Park is one of Taiwan’s most stunning natural attractions. This diverse landscape of mountains, gorges, forests and waterfalls covers more than 355 square miles (920 square kilometers). Hike up challenging peaks or along gentle woodland paths, raft over rapids and explore the rich diversity of plant and animal life.

Before setting out to explore the park, stop by the visitor center near the main entrance to pick up trail maps. Ask about current trail conditions, because landslides will occasionally close some of the paths.

Trek to the top of Hehuanshan Mountain, which rises to a height of 11,207 feet (3,416-meters). For something a little easier, wander along the Baiyang Waterfall Trail, which follows a 1.2-mile (2.2-kilometer) path to the waterfall.

The park’s most famous attraction is Taroko Gorge. The deep chasm was forged by the Liwu River, which stretches for 11 miles (18 kilometers) and is bordered by marble cliffs that rise for hundreds of feet. Come here for hiking, biking and whitewater rafting.

Drive along the mountainous Su-Hua Highway to Chinghshui Cliff, designated by the government of Taiwan as one of the Eight Wonders of the island. Stop at the small pullover park at the 109.6-mile (176.4-kilometer) marker, where you can admire the spectacular scenery.

Wildlife lovers will be kept busy trying to spot some of the more than 46 species of mammals that live in the park. These include wild boars, deer and black bears.

Pay a visit to the Eternal Spring Shrine, located on a hillside overlooking the Liwu River. The complex is dedicated to the workers who lost their lives building the highway to the park. Below it is a spring that flows year-round.

This spectacular wilderness is located 14 miles (23 kilometers) north of Hualien. Arrive by rental car or take a bus from the city. Check out the bus timetable by visiting the park’s official website. There you will also find details of camping spots and their associated charges.

Taroko National Park is open throughout the year and admission is free.
