Learn about rescue programs and take part in an animal adoption scheme.
A marked trail surrounds a placid 42-acre (17-hectare) lake and goes between the zoo’s various enclosures. Look up to see monkeys swinging in the trees and watch sloth bears engage in playful activities. Observe elegant antelopes such as the blackbuck, Indian gazelle and nilgai (blue bull), which is the largest Asian antelope. Spot leopards, Bengal tigers and white lions prowling amid the vegetation.
Varied bird species are housed inside individual cages. Among them are eagles, peacocks and vultures. Test your nerves at the Snake Park, where a 13-feet (4-meter) long king cobra is one of the various types of snakes. There are also crocodiles of varying sizes, bison and elephants.
The park’s rescue program acts as a rehabilitation shelter for orphaned and injured wild animals. Rescued animals are cared for, reintroduced to their habitats and then relocated in safe locations. Contribute to wildlife conservation by adopting and sponsoring a resident animal. Adoption options range from one-day-old animals to six months and five years, and all fees go toward animal welfare.
Find the zoo located in the Katraj suburb of Pune and about a 30-minute drive from the city center. To avoid parking difficulties, it’s best to travel by auto rickshaw, bus or taxi.
Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is open from Thursday to Tuesday and there’s an admission fee. An additional fee is applicable if you want to enter with a camera. Battery-operated vehicles are available for rent for those that don’t want to walk the trail. Note that some animals seek refuge during hotter periods of the day and are therefore harder to see.
