Study the flamboyantly decorated stone walls and columns of this Taoist temple and attend an annual festival dedicated to holy pigs.

Sanxia Tsu Shi Temple is one of the most instantly recognizable temples in the Sanxia district of New Taipei City. It presents both a glimpse into the spiritual practices of Taoism and a place to pause for a moment of peaceful contemplation. Sanxia Tsu Shi Temple is also a great place to visit for a splendid showcase of Taiwanese art and architecture.

Founded in 1769 to honor the acclaimed Buddhist monk Qingshui, the temple has had a turbulent existence. It was rebuilt in 1867 after being flattened by an earthquake over three decades before. Japanese rulers then burned the temple down in 1895 and it lay in ruins until after World War II. Taiwanese artist Li Meishu designed the current temple in 1947 and he combined ancient, modern, European and Japanese artistic styles.

The temple is distinctive in that all of the walls and columns are crafted from stone. Spend time appreciating the intricate reliefs and carvings of animals, deities and mythological creatures that adorn the facade and curved roofs. The interior decor follows the same format, with prayer halls decorated with sculpted dragons, elephants, lions and other sacred beings. Observe as worshippers come to say prayers and give offerings to Qingshui.

During the Lunar New Year the temple hosts the intriguing and controversial Holy Pig festival. Local farmers fatten pigs throughout the year in a bid to become the owner of the largest swine. Mingle with the thousands that attend the festival, the origins of which date back to a time when settlers prayed for protection from wild animals.

Sanxia Tsu Shi Temple is open daily and admission is free. Find it located in the center of downtown Sanxia District. While here, visit the nearby Sanxia Old Street for its baroque-style architecture, handicraft shops and street food bars. Also worth visiting in the district is the New Taipei City Hakka Museum and Li Meishu Memorial Gallery.
