Tree-like saguaro cacti of varying shapes and sizes line this short and easy walking path with interpretive signs about life in the desert.

The Desert Ecology Trail is a paved path that meanders through the western part of Saguaro National Park East. Informative plaques line the path, providing insights into the intricate ecosystems and wildlife in the desert. Rest on one of the benches along the trail, admiring the spectacular scenery of the arid terrain.

Arrive at the stone trail marker at the beginning of the track and take photos of the scenic topography. The area is particularly beautiful at sunrise and sunset, when the mountains are silhouetted against a red morning or evening sky. Stroll between the shrubs, wild flowers and other dry vegetation in this stunning park. Join the joggers and runners raising their fitness on the path.

Notice the great range of cacti rising from the desert floor in all sizes, shapes and forms. Signs beside the different saguaro cactus trees explain how they survive in this arid terrain, even producing beautiful flowers.

In the distance to the east, you’ll spot the Tanque Verde Peak among its neighboring rocky behemoths. Bring your binoculars and gaze up at the sky to see the range of birds. Put together a packed lunch and enjoy a picnic with your kids by the side of the route.

Note that the trail is considered moderate and is appropriate for beginner walkers, as it is short and flat. The trail has no shaded areas so bring plenty of water and a hat.

The Desert Ecology Trail is at the western edge of Saguaro National Park East, in southern Arizona. From the center of Tucson, drive east for 18 miles (29 kilometers) to get here in a little more than half an hour. Enjoy the spectacular scenery along the route. While you’re in the region, make sure to see other nearby sights such as the Rincon Mountain Visitor Center, Agua Caliente Park and Chuck Ford Lakeside Park.
