Choose one or more items to build your trip:
Read, study, research and visit cultural exhibitions at the University of Aberdeen's landmark library building, a towering structure covered in glass.

The Sir Duncan Rice Library is a prominent feature of the Aberdeen skyline, a seven-story cube-shaped glass building that can be seen from many parts of the city. Visit the main academic library of the University of Aberdeen for its book collections and architecture.

Before entering, study the façades which are composed of an irregular pattern of zebra-like jagged stripes of white and clear glass. They give off a shimmering visual effect during the day and a soft glow at night.

The library is open to students, university staff, visitors and the general public. Each floor is dedicated to a specific area of study such as the arts, sciences, humanities and social sciences. There is also a Special Collections Centre housing rare books, archives and old manuscripts. Some of the material dates back to the third century B.C. To access the center's reading room to undertake research, register in advance on the library's official website. To complete your registration, you will need to bring photo ID and proof of address on your first visit.

If you want to do some quiet reading, go to any of the silent study rooms, which are located on four floors. Alternatively, visit one of the soft-seating areas which are available on several floors. To read while enjoying a view, pick one of the formal study desks. These are located by the windows around each side of the building.

Take your nose out of your books for a while and enjoy refreshments in the café on the first floor. Then walk over to the Gallery, which hosts temporary exhibitions and displays.

The Sir Duncan Rice Library is open daily during term times. It lies less than 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the center of Aberdeen and can be reached by bus or taxi. If you are using a rental car, parking is available for a fee in nearby garages. Parking on the university campus is only for staff or visitors with a permit.
