Choose one or more items to build your trip:
Delve into the butterfly house and let a parrot land on your arm, before cycling across a bridge that serves as one of the world’s largest sundials.

Visit the Turtle Bay Exploration Park, an extensive open-air complex with botanical gardens and a forestry and wildlife center. Trails along the Sacramento River meander through these scenic grounds, providing lovely views of the water. Learn about the ecosystems and natural history of the area in the Turtle Bay Museum.

Stand on the shores of the Sacramento River and marvel at the sleek design of the Sundial Bridge. Cycle across the structure and enjoy the vista downriver. Notice the rising white spire that serves as one of the world’s largest functioning sundials. The bridge lights up at night, creating an iconic sight.

Stroll through the McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, which covers 300 acres (120 hectares) and showcases plants from around the world. Take your little ones through the children’s garden and admire the colorful winged creatures of the butterfly garden. Go to the educational Paul Bunyan’s Forest Camp to see the animals and learn about old-world forest camps. The Parrot Playhouse is a memorable destination, where exotic birds may land on your arm. Let your little ones frolic in the play area.

Explore natural history, art and science in the Turtle Bay Museum, where a Native American bark house and an underwater tank filled with fish are among the highlights. Rest your feet at the Turtle Bay Café by the river.

The park, which was inaugurated in 1997, opens daily in summer. Note that during the winter the park is open Wednesday through Sunday from morning until late afternoon.

Turtle Bay Exploration Park is on the southern and northern sides of the Sacramento River, in the northeastern outskirts of Redding. From the city center, walk northeast for less than half an hour to get here. Nearby sights include the Redding Civic Auditorium, Redding Memorial Park and the Aqua Golf Driving Range.
