Underwater Hotels

Now that’s some deep sleep

There are few things better than lounging at a waterside hotel on your summer vacation—unless that hotel is actually under the water, of course. We’ve rounded up some of the most luxurious underwater hotels (plus a few overwater bungalows for those who prefer to sleep above, not next to, the fishes) to make your next trip unforgettable.

1. Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland, China
Built on an abandoned quarry in Songjiang (about 20 miles outside of Shanghai), the Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland features 16 underground floors—two of which are completely underwater. Book a "Premier Underwater View" suite for views directly out into the aquarium, then visit the underwater restaurant to round out your submerged experience.

2. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, The Maldives
The Maldives is no stranger to underwater attractions, but its most famous is The Muraka, an underwater suite at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. Built more than 16 feet under the Indian Ocean, the two-floor suite has a bedroom, bathroom, and living area with floor-to-ceiling windows affording views of the surrounding water. The resort is also home to the first underwater restaurant in the world, the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant.

3. Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai
Dubai’s Atlantis, The Palm lets you choose from two underwater suites, appropriately named “Neptune” and “Poseidon.” Each suite features glass walls that look directly into the resort’s aquarium—and the 65,000 sea creatures that fill it. We wouldn’t expect anything less from the over-the-top city that is Dubai.

4. Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to forgo the underwater hotel experience for something a little more traditional—say, an overwater bungalow in a tropical location. If that’s the case, you can’t do much better than the thatched-roof retreats at the Four Seasons Resort in Bora Bora. Aside from being steps away from the waters of the South Pacific, guests can have their meals delivered by canoe, so you literally never have to leave your little slice of heaven.

5. Disney's Polynesian Village Resort, Florida
The only overwater bungalows in the United States can be found at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in Orlando, Florida. As its name suggests, the resort replicates the splendor of a South Pacific hideaway, complete with swaying palm trees, tropical cocktails, and, of course, traditional overwater suites. With the water views and retro-inspired island décor, you might blink and think you’ve actually been transported to Bora Bora.
