For those of you who don’t know, forest bathing is the practice of walking into a tree-filled environment and consciously connecting to your surroundings. The idea originated in Japan, but it has become a worldwide phenomenon thanks to the increased interest in wellness and mindfulness. We’ve rounded up some of the best spots around the globe to surround yourself with trees, so take a deep breath and get inspired.  



1. Hoh Rainforest, Washington
The Hoh Rainforest feels like a lush island paradise, but it’s actually located in Washington’s Olympic National Park. Stepping into the forest is like stepping into a soundproof room with mossy green wallpaper—depending on the park crowds, you can escape the sights and sounds of civilization completely, save for the occasional flap of a bird’s wing.

2. Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica
Cloud forests are a specific type of wooded area where atmospheric conditions allow for a consistent covering of clouds. One of the most famous examples is the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. Walking through the forest is like a dream come to life, with the trees shrouded in mist and water gently tripping from the canopy tops. Make it a point to walk across a suspension bridge to feel like you’re literally walking on a cloud.

3. Sequoia National Park, California
There’s nothing like a natural wonder to remind us how small we really are, especially if that natural wonder is notably gigantic. California’s Sequoia National Park is filled with groves of giant sequoia trees, which can grow upwards of 250 feet. It’s the perfect spot to go forest bathing and truly feel at one with nature—and the world as a whole.

4. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Japan
No better place to forest bathe than its country of origin, right? The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto's top tourist attractions, although you’ll feel as if you’re the only person on earth once you stand among the soaring stalks of bamboo. On a windy day, the sound of the wooden trees knocking into each other is particularly lovely.

5. Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, Vancouver
Vancouver is a city known for its accessibility to nature, including the stunning Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. The park is most famous for itssuspension bridge, as its name suggests. The 450-foot-long bridge hovers 230 feet above the Capilano River, giving a unique vantage point to brave visitors. This is one case where you actually should look down...and up...and all around.
