Cozy and Nice

My wife and I had a great time here. The rooms are a bit "cozy" and therefore you and your neighbors are in close quarters, but the service was great and it’s in a perfect location, right off of Powell.

A Union Square Gem!

The Larkspur Hotel exceeded my expectations! The extremely courteous staff, great central location, complimentary wine tasting in the evening and a high quality continental breakfast all made for an outstanding stay. Within five blocks of the Powell street cable car turn around (1/2 block from a cable car stop!) As others have noted, the rooms are a bit small but extremely clean, quaint and comfortable!

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Save yourself some $$ and take advantage of the complimentary continental breakfast offered at this hotel. Fabulous and fresh - coffee, tea, juice, fruit and high-quality muffins, danishes and croissants. (not the typical boxed variety others call breakfast.)

ok hotel for the price

Pros: location is excellent, very close to Union Square, shops and the BART. The lobby is nice and they have a wine tasting for free (though wine is no good), also breakfast was good. The bed was very comfortable. Cons: small room in need of renovation, especially the bathroom. But the worst of all was really the reception gentleman, who was not very friendly.

Not much of a ’renovation’

The lobby was beautiful, not so much the rooms. The mattress sagged in the middle, like Homer Simpson’s couch. The bathroom was very small and outdated. Large walk in closet, though, which we found strange - put the money into the room and bathroom! The clerk at the reception desk was cold and impersonal. And neither she nor the doorman were very informative about the parking arrangement - you need to get validation from the hotel before parking your car.

Great Place and Location!!

I really like this hotel. Based on the reviews, I chose this hotel, and I am glad I did. This hotel is located in the heart of San Francisco, and is within walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown, and Fisherman’s Wharf. Also, cables cars and buses are available (buy multi-day passes) so that you can get to the Golden Gate Bridge, and other attractions.

Traveler's tip on dining

There are many places to eat within walking distance. I spent most of my time eating in Chinatown as there are great places to eat. Also, souvenir shopping in Chinatown is cheap and worth the walk.

Nice hotel for price and location

If you are looking to save some bucks i recommend the Larkspur Hotel. It’s in an ideal location. Although the elevator is super tiny (really only like 3 people can fit in their with their bags) we were on the 3rd floor so it was no big deal. they have complimentary wine tasting and breakfast (pastries, coffee etc.). The room was kind of small but quaint, you can really feel/see the history of the building.

Traveler's tip on nightlife

The Ambassador on Geary, just blocks away. good music and drinks.

Great location & price

This hotel offered great amenities: wine hour in the lounge, breakfast and papers in the AM. Bed was lush & comfortable. Ceiling fan a nice touch. Rooms small but I didn’t come to San Francisco to sit in my room. Only downside: metal doors. When people enter and leave, it sounds like a bank vault slamming.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

I went sailing on the Alma, an 1891 schooner docked at the National Maritime Museum at Pier 39. Three hours on an old wooden ship in a beautiful bay for less than $40. It was great.

Union Squre bargain

This is a perfect hotel for the solo traveler. Our room was attractive, comfortable but extremely small. Bathroom space is limited to one, and there is minimum space for toiletries. That’s all doable though, and it is in a great area.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

No parking but hotel has contract with garage less than 1 block away. Very reasonable for downtown S.F.,$32.00 per 24 hrs.

Highly Recommend!

We were very pleased with our stay at the Larkspur on our recent visit. Great location close to transportation, shopping, dining. The service was excellent and we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast and wine hour in the evening. The room was very small, but was clean, well-decorated and had a wonderful feather-bed mattress with nice linens. Can’t wait to go back!

great stay at Larkspur

Really enjoyed the Larkspur - free wifi a little spotty, but hey, it was free (and worked great in the lobby, so it might just have been our floor). Nice upscale bath products (Lather) and a good-sized room. Maybe a little bit loud for non-city folks as it’s right by the street the cable cars run up, so you can hear them till midnight or so. Otherwise pretty quiet.

Great Hotel in Union Square

The hotel was great - right off the cable car line. The staff was very helpful but not pushy at all - when you needed them they were there - when you didn’t want them - they were invisible! The beds were wonderful!!! Bathrooms were a bit small but overall the Hotel is a great find in SFO!

Traveler's tip on nightlife

The San Francisco Playhouse is right across the street - they are a strong theater company with pretty good prices.

Good location and amenities

Centrally located, older style, but well updated. Very clean. Bathroom was quite small, but the closet was huge (it’s an old building...) Free Internet PC’s in lobby and free buffet breakfast. No air conditioning, but a good ceiling fan. Parking is around the block, but quite a bit cheaper than the big-name hotels - I saved quite a bit of money just on that. Really good value.

Wonderful location but spartan room

The best feature of the Larkspur Hotel is its location. It is on Sutter Street, close to Union Square and half a block from the Powell/Market cable car line. The room we had was spartan, at best, but we were only there for one night, so it was okay. We had originally reserved a queen bed, but when we checked in, I asked if two double beds were available. The desk clerk was helpful and courteous. The only room with two beds turned out to have two twin beds, which worked out fine for my son and me. The two twin beds took up most of the room. The room did have a flat screen TV, though, as the one concession to the 21st century. As others have said, the bathroom is small, but it was clean, and the bathtub/shower stall worked fine. Breakfast was included, but by the time we got there (8:45 a.m.), there were slim pickings among the pre-packaged pastries and bananas. We parked in the Sutter/Stockton Garage, which is about 1.5 blocks east of the hotel. There is a 10 minute loading zone in front of the hotel for you to load and unload bags. I would definitely consider staying in this hotel again, if I only needed to be there for one or two nights. If it was a longer stay, I would probably opt for something a little cushier.

Good for price

It was a good room for the price. Location was good if you want to be near union square. Rooms are small, but not too small. Parking is kinda far. I thinks its $27 self park or $40 valet. First room I got was 2 twin beds, and they were able to switch to a rooms with a full.

Very comfortable and affordable

This was my 2nd stay at the Larkspur and both times were great. Rooms are very comfortable - no frills, just everything you need to feel at home. I like the "old time" feel to it -- "real" furniture, big heavy doors, walk-in closet (robe included), nice TV, very comfortable bed, quiet, and a ceiling fan to keep the temp just right. Very friendly staff too. Great location, and great deal for the price!

Small, Clean, but cold.

Pros: - Comfortable pillow top bed. - Free Wireless Internet access. - Great location near Union Square. - Least expensive self-parking fee we’ve found. - Friendly staff. Cons: - Cold room (stayed in late Feb). Front desk actually said that they wait until they get complaints from customers before they turn on the heat. - No ice machine in the hotel or ice buckets in the room. - Parking is a block away. - Between 4 and 6 pm on weekdays you are not allowed to park in front of the hotel to unload your bags.

Nice hotel in the heart of Union Square

I stay in the area frequently and this is the best value I’ve found. I was able to book a room here for a very reasonable rate and the quality, service, and amenities are better than nearby hotels that cost more. Staff is very friendly ad helpful, I highly recommend this boutique hotel.

Traveler's tip on nightlife

For the younger crowd, check out the Cantina Bar on 580 Sutter (just up the street from the Larkspur Hotel). For the older set, I’d recommend Harry Dentons Starlight room, which is a few blocks away on the top floor of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel.

Small older rooms. Great location.

This hotel is in a wonderful location. Price is right. Rooms are small, bathrooms small. Comfortable bed. Helpful staff. Great place to stay at a great price if you are not one of the "fancy people."

The Larkspur is back!

Great hotel, they just re-modeled the whole thing. Beds were super soft, and rooms clean.

Will definitely return to this value for the money

Excellent location near Union Square, 1 block from cable car. Welcoming entrance and lobby with fireplace creating the ambiance of an English club in the bar. Friendly, capable staff. Room small, but included desk, 2 chairs, chest of drawers and night stand, with Queen bed, TV, coffee maker, large walk-in closet. Bathroom very clean, but very small, the only draw-back with this hotel.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Perfect place to stay "in the city" overnight.

this hotel was very nice, the room was small but thats how most of san francisco is built. very cozy atmosphere, it felt more like a bedroom than hotel room.
