Maintenance Unpleasant

Maybe when hotel finishes with the refurbished upgrades, the hotel will seem like a construction sight. The scent was not fresh in the lobby as well. I wouldn’t return there until I knew all was finished and corrected.

Great hotel

It is a great property with a ton of history, the two towers offering it’s guests the choice of historic or modern. Mina’s restaurant, in the heart of the hotel, is truly a fine dining experience. Great location, great dining, and great service.

Great location

The Westin St. Francis was in the best location with so much to do in the area. My room was neat and spacious. The view was amazing.

I read newspapers on Sundays too

No newspapers were available in the hotel at 7:30 in the morning--the gift shop had a sign saying it opened at 7 but it was closed. This is unacceptable in a major hotel. If they can’t get the shope open they should have newspapers at the desk. Not everyone wants to read news online.

Not impressed

A beautiful but older hotel. Also a bit pricey and there are other hotels less expensive in the same great location. Definetly would hev preferred to spend that money shopping or sight seeing rather than sleeping

Disappointed

The only people who were nice were the Valet staff as well as housekeeping. Everybody from the front desk to the conceirge was "snobby." One would expect to be treated well at these fancy hotels. Also, you had to pay $40/day for the hotel gym. An additional $50 per night to park your car plus parking tax. I usually don’t mind spending a lot of money on hotels as long as the service is worth it. I don’t think I would stay at this hotel again. I have to admit, it does look fancy on the outside but the rooms are old.

San Francisco, Union Square

The stay at the hotel was fine - except I wish I had been able to upgrade to a room with a view (my view: "court yard" which actually was a room across an open area viewing rooms on the same floor. The hotel would have accommodated my request, except there was a big event in town, and many participants had taken all the rooms with a view. Would I go back? I would probably try another hotel, but not for any negative issues with the hotel.

Take some warm clothes.

Great location; nice views.

This was a nice stay. The lobby was under rennoavation which was sort of a bummer, but they did keep things draped off and I never heard any construction noise. We stayed on the 21 floor in the new tower and never heard a peep from the hall or neighbors. Cool views from the very fast exterior elevators. Room was comfortable for the three of us and the bathroom was nicley appointed with marble. The Ansel Adams portaits of the hotel in the lobby were fun to look at and elements of the old, elegant charm were still around. Staff was pleasant and efficient; we didn’t have alot of interaction with them, but what we did have was nice.

Get the muni pass: it’s available for 1, 3 and 7 day increments for what I thought was a reasonable price and you can hop on the cable cars right out front or the buses down on Geary or Market street. You can really get anywere in the city that way. The cable cars, being tourist attractions, sometimes have a line (weekends, mid morning) to board so it’s not always the most efficient solution, but it’s still a fun ride!

It was ok

I thought a 4 star hotel would have been better. The lobby was undergoing reonovations. The maids wer quite noisy in the morning with the slamming of the doors. The doors themselves wer heavy and made noise if you were not careful. Staff was sometimes very helpful and sometimes not. I asked about some noice on the street and the dest clerk kept addressing me a ’man’ Eg. "I can’t do anything about that , man" or "I’m telling what I can do. man". Whatever happened to ’sir’? Hotel was convenient to shopping, restaurants and transportation.

The cable car costs $5.00 per ride unless you buy a transportation pass. You can buy a pass at a booth on UnionSquare Park. We were there for a week and saved a lot of money ($24.00 for the week for use of cable car, streetcars, buses and subways) They also have 3 day passes. ASk the conceirge in tehhotel for a transportaion map - I think it’s free at the hotel otherwise you have to pay $3.00 at the Tranpsotation Booth. Check out the new Walt Disney museum in the Presidio - very interesting.

Great Location, not so good service

This hotel is in a prime loation on Union Square. when we arrived in the room i noticed that the bathroom only had one bathtowel for two people! Also no robes. Then when i started to log on to my laptop i noticed a sign that said in room internet was not free! This after paying a lot for the room. even most one and two star hotels now offer free internet. So i went back down to the lobby and complained about the lack of robes and towels and the price of the internet. To their credit they offered complimentary internet for the two day stay and brought robes and more towels to the room. But on check out i still got charged for the internet and had to go back down and wrestle with them again. I loved the hotel but was dissapointed in the lack of amenities like robes and free internet. That should be a given in a hotel of this caliber.

Best Hotel In Area

The hotel and location of hotel were fabulous you just need to make sure you get a room with a view. Everything was within walking distance and the cable cars ran right in front of the hotel. I would recommend staying at this hotel again for the right price.

Old but not chic

I was expecting better from a Westin Hotel! I understand that it is an old hotel with a lot of history but it was just a sad experience all around. I could have forgiven the impersonal and almost rude behavior of the doorman and front desk personnel if the room was up to par. I paid a little more for a higher floor and larger room. It was very spacious with a good view, so they got that much right. The room was shabby, the carpet stained and worn. There was mold in the bathroom grout all around the bathtub and the bathroom smelled like cleaning solution layered over old socks. The toilet was like the kind you find in an airport or public restroom (without the motion sensors). I try to stay in Westin Hotels because of its impeccable service and beautiful rooms (bed and bath included), but I will never stay here again or recommend it to my fellow travelers.

Just Okay

The quality of the older rooms was just okay for the price that we paid. The beds were comfortable, but the bathroom was surprisingly run down. It was small and awkward...tiny sink, toilet in an awkward location and it didn’t flush. The hotel staff was helpful and the toilet was fixed within a hour. We couldn’t use the fridge because it was so high tech that if we removed or added anything the room would be charged within 30 seconds of the weight change. When we called the front desk they initially were not helpful problem solving this. However, on a second attempt they offered to bring up a fridge for us. The location right on Union Square was convenient, and the Oak Room restaurant in the hotel was convenient and delicious to a bunch of tired runners who did not feel like walking very far after running a half marathon.

The most comfortable bed ever...

Wonderful room, bed was extremely comfortable and cozy as well as the double headed relaxing shower. Location was fabulous, very convenient for a fun San Francisco weekend. Staff was very firendly and helpful, we had a great time and can’t wait to return.

Wasn’t that great

I don’t know what I was expecting exactly but my overall experience wasn’t too impressive. The room was dark and too modern so that it did not feel truly comfortable. If you even open the mini-bar and pull out the items to look at them, their system thinks you used them and tries to charge you for it so you have to make sure that doesn’t happen. They have a service that if you hang the notice on the outside of your door they won’t come clean your room (to save on environment). However, when we did this, we noticed they cleaned our room and saw in the fine print we had to have this on the door before 2am?? I thought that was really stupid. They don’t automatically deliver a paper to your room in the morning and when we checked in they never offered that to us. All the hotel employees seemed ’distracted’ and there was a lot going on with hotel remodeling and Nike Women’s Marathon. The only great thing was that it was right downtown and walking distance to everywhere we wanted to go.

See the show ’Wicked’ in San Francisco. It is funny, good music, and entertaining.

Very classy hotel with excellent San Francisco location

The Westin St. Francis is definitely one of San Francisco’s best hotels. Service is excellent, everything is impeccably clean, staff is friendly and courteous and you just can’t beat the location. You walk outside of your hotel and you’re right in front of Union Square and also right in front of Cable Car and Bus stops. I would definitely stay there again.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

If you have time, in addition to seeing the local San Francisco sights, drive to Sonoma for wine tasting. It’s not as crowded as Napa Valley and wine tasting is free at many of the wineries.

Small rooms ,mediocre service, below average value

I was really disappointed in this Expedia pick. The super deluxe room was small even by SF standards although we bought the upgraded view room...Service was mediocre from room service to car valet...The hotel no longer lives up to its venerable reputation.Several other Union Square hotels give much more for the same or less money.

Very nice classical hotel

Nice hotel in the best area of San Francisco (Union Sq) with the best shops close to the hotel. One of the best restaurants of the city, Michael Mina, and excellent rooms.

Traveler's tip on dining

a lot of good restaurants in and very close to the hotel.

Great Location

Excellent location, right on Union Square. The room was small but had everything you would expect in the room. Good value. Well worth recommending for a base in San Francisco. Not a place to linger in the room but then wwho would if you are on vacation,

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Use the BART to and from the airport. The station is only a couple of blocks away and it saves you a $40 taxi fare.

NOT VERY CLEAN

I was unpleasantly surprised to find the hotel not exactly "Westin quality clean" For the price I paid, I expected the room to be ultra clean, but found cigarette stubs on the window sill (I asked for a non-smoking room). had to wipe the bathroom mirror and walls since there were toothpaste stains on the wall by the sink:( Very unimpressive

Great location, great hotel!

This hotel was beautiful in pictures and in person. It was well-maintained and even undergoing renovations in the lobby, but hardly noticeable at all. We had the standard room so it was a little smaller than I expected, but normal for a hotel in SF. However, it was still very comfortable and we enjoyed the flat screen tv. The best thing about the hotel is the location and convenience. There was so much to do and see from every direction and seemed pretty safe even for late night walks. Overall, it was a great experience and I would stay here again.

Great hotel and location

We stayed on the 26th floor of the newer tower. Very comfortable rooms. Beds are definitely heavenly. Don’t take stuff out of the minibar as they’re on sensors. Front desk was very accommodating when we told them we moved stuff to store some leftovers, they took off the charges. Location right in Union Square can’t be beat. Right on cable car lines and lots of shopping nearby.

Traveler's tip on dining

Ate at Sear’s Fine Foods 1 block north. Look for a line of people standing outside. Food is great! Akiko’s Sushi bar was a great hole in the wall with 10 or so seats. Yuet Lee in China Town is a great hole in the wall and good prices.

It was noisy, service was terrible, very user unfriendly.

I have stayed at many different hotels in this fine city, but this was the worst.
