Henley Beach

Adelaide

A beachside park with a wooden pergola, people relaxing on the grass, and a couple practicing martial arts.
A beach with a volleyball net, two people walking, and a boat in the water.
A modern building with a large sign that reads "Melt."
A beach with a metal railing and bicycles parked along it.
A beach volleyball net on a sandy beach with the ocean in the background.
In this lively coastal hub, a wooden jetty connects the beach to the main plaza, which is packed with shops and bars.

While vacationing in Adelaide, plant to visit Henley Beach, a coastal suburb centered on its namesake beach on St. Vincent Gulf. Spectacular sunset views are among the main draws to the picturesque Adelaide suburb, known for its plaza, shops and strand. Stroll along the beach, letting the gentle waves lap your feet, as you appreciate the beauty of South Australia’s coastline.

The highlight of the area is the actual Henley Beach, a long sandy stretch that is ideal for people-watching and sunbathing. Purchase ice cream from a stall at the rear of the beach or relax in one of the cafés. Stroll out along the Henley Jetty and appreciate the views of the sand and the water around you. For a sense of the local culture, chat with some of the fishers as they await their catch of the day.

Walk back along the wooden planks of the jetty and pass over the beach to reach Henley Square. Surrounding the plaza are all sorts of international restaurants, cafés and stores. Stay into the evening and relax with a few drinks at one of the bar terraces.

Note that the suburb is believed to have been named after the English birthplace of South Australia’s first judge, Sir Charles Cooper. It’s thought that he declined the offer of having the beach named after him. Learn how the beach was advertised in 1860 as being “free from all the noxious smells which have been cause of complaint elsewhere.” Enjoy the fresh air that continues to waft across the strand today.

West of Fulham Gardens, Henley Beach lies along the coast on the western edge of Adelaide. It is northwest of Adelaide Airport and a short drive south from the East Grange train station. From central Adelaide, drive west for 7 miles (12 kilometers) to get here in about 20 minutes. Travel along the coast for nearby districts such as Grange, Glenelg and Semaphore.
