Mount Barker

Adelaide

A historic building with multiple balconies, signs for Grays Inn and Liquor Legends, and a stone facade.
A railway track leading through a tunnel surrounded by dense forest.
A street with buildings, a sign for Adelaide Hills Real Estate, and a sign for The Barker.
A railway crossing sign with a red stop sign above it, surrounded by lush greenery and a road.
A large green sign spelling "HOPE" on a metal fence in front of a historic building.
Try the wine at Ngeringa, stop for a picnic in the city park and spot birds above the marshy terrain of the Laratinga Wetlands.

Visit Mount Barker to experience a lively spot that serves as an idyllic base to explore the wetlands and forests in Adelaide’s southeastern suburbs. Markets, vineyards and a great flurry of birds are among the main attractions in these parts. Enjoy the serenity and friendly atmosphere in this town and chat with the locals for a sense of its identity.

Climb up the slopes of the namesake mountain a little east of the township, which is the largest town in Adelaide Hills. Follow the nature trails of Keith Stephenson Park and let your kids frolic in the playground. The comfortable space beside the lake is a scenic spot for sunbathing and picnics. Continue along the paths until you reach the Laratinga Wetlands, snapping photos of the spectacular scenery on the way. Bring your binoculars for bird-watching.

Beside the park, watch a recent movie in the Wallis Cinema Mount Barker. Stroll along the tree-lined main street and, on a rare rainy day, explore the shops and restaurants of the Barker Plaza shopping center. Spot the adjacent Mount Barker Town Hall and the Mount Barker Magistrates Court. On Saturday mornings, wander through the Adelaide Hills Farmers Market. Taste samples at the Prancing Pony Brewery and try the wine at the Ngeringa biodynamic vineyard.

For more outdoor adventure, hike through picturesque Totness Recreation Park, beside Cornerstone College. Your kids will love the nearby Hahndorf Farm Barn, with its petting zoo full of all sorts of farmyard animals. Admire the impressive tower of Nixon’s Mill.

Mount Barker lies just southeast of Adelaide in the southeastern corner of South Australia. From the center of Adelaide, drive southeast for 20 miles (33 kilometers) to get here in just over 30 minutes. During your travels in this area, stop at destinations such as Cleland Conservation Park, Brownhill Creek Recreation Park and Mount George.
