With an ancient castle, promenade, harbor area and historic quarter of centuries-old buildings, there is plenty to visit in Alicante City Centre. Climb up to the stronghold, visit a 14th-century church and enjoy fun-filled hours at the beach.

The city's crowning glory is the Castle of Santa Barbara, a medieval Arab fortress at the top of Benacantil Mountain. Reach the fortification by car, bus or on foot. If you decide to walk, go earlier in the day before the sun is at its highest. You can also get to the castle by elevator from the foot of the mountain.

Then explore Alicante City Centre's ancient heart, the old town which is spread across the hillside beneath the castle. Tour art galleries, visit the Convent of Sisters of the Holy Blood and study the art and architecture of the 14th-century Basilica of Santa Maria.

Inside the baroque town hall find a beautiful chapel and salons adorned with works by local artists. Next door to this 18th-century building is The City Unveiled. This is a collection of ruins of the ancient city walls and houses that were destroyed during a bombardment by the French Armada in 1691.

From the old town, follow the Esplanade of España, a palm tree-lined promenade decorated with more than 6 million marble floor tiles. This attractive thoroughfare runs alongside the port, which is a good spot for a bite to eat in one of the restaurants. After your meal stretch out under the sun on the golden sands of nearby Postiguet Beach.

Later in the day go back to the esplanade to join locals with a favorite Mediterranean pastime, an early evening stroll. Browse artisan stalls selling local handicrafts and dine on the pavement terraces of one of the promenade's bars or restaurants.

Alicante City Centre is approximately 9 miles (15 kilometers) north of Alicante Airport. From there travel by bus, taxi or rental car to enjoy the downtown area's historical buildings, café culture and laidback beach vibe.
