Alishan is approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Kaohsiung and 55 miles (89 kilometers) from Taichung.
It's hardly surprising Alishan is a perennial favourite with travelers from all over the world; the surrounding region is criss-crossed with wonderful things to see and do. Gukeng, 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the southeast, and Lugu, 20 miles (32 kilometers) to the south of Alishan are worth a visit too.
Kaohsiung is approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Alishan. This center contains a great selection of things to see and do, like Xizi Bay, Shou Shan Zoo and Kaohsiung City Music Hall. Holy Rosary Basilica Cathedral, Kaohsiung Film Archive and East Gate (Fenyi Gate) are also good places to spend time.
Follow the threads of the region's rich cultural tapestry at Taiwan's history museums and art museums.
When the sun is shining, take the time to explore Taiwan's beautiful waterways. Swimming and scuba diving are some of the most popular ways to get wet here. When you hear the call to adventure, follow the lead of active locals and spend the day hiking and mountain climbing.
When it is time to depart Alishan, put the lens cap back on your camera, spend your last of your New Taiwan dollars, and bid a fond Zàijiàn (farewell) to this special place.
