Station Cottage - Perfect venue for a Shropshire holiday

Station Cottage is a recently renovated Victorian railway building. Offering cosy accommodation for up to 4 guests, it is a perfect base for walking, cycling (road and off-road) or just for enjoying being surrounded by green spaces and fresh air.

Situated in the small, but thriving, village of Bucknell, it is within easy walking distance of an excellent pub (2 minutes walk), a petrol station and butchers.

Accommodation includes a living room with woodburning stove, private kitchen and bathroom.

Location

Sat immediately adjacent to the rural Heart of Wales line, listed as one of the Guardian's 'Best Travel Discoveries of 2018', Station Cottage Bucknell is a dream destination for railway lovers young and old. 8 trains a day pass slowly, and quietly, through the station with the conductors and drivers always happy to share a friendly wave.

Grade II listed, and recognised by Pevsner in his 'Buildings of England' books, the cottage is an architectural gem of significant historical interest.

Walkers are spoilt for choice in the surrounding countryside. There are a variety of footpaths and bridleways to explore, plus well loved longer routes such as Offa's Dyke, the Mortimer Trail and the recently opened Heart of Wales walking route.

Mountain bikers will love the trails at both Hopton and Bucknell Woods. Hopton has an excellent, clearly waymarked red-circuit, and both venues offer uplift days through Pearce Cycles in addition to occasional organised downhill races.

For road cyclists, there are hundreds of route options on quiet roads with beautful views. Your hosts, Nina and Sam, are both keen cyclists and will be happy to offer route advice from short potters suitable for children, to 190 mile epics taking you to the Welsh coast and back.

Secure storage for several bikes is available.

For railway enthusiasts, the Cottage is an excellent base for exploring the Heart of Wales line. Why not use it a base for a circular trip around the whole route, using their Explorer ticket? It's also worth keeping an eye out for occasional special services, a steam train chugging past the station is a real sight to behold.

The nearby market towns of Knighton and Ludlow are well worth visiting, with Ludlow particularly well known for its local food scene, which is accompanied by a large number of high quality restaurants.

Getting around

Station Cottage sits on the rural Heart of Wales railway line, and is easily reached by train. Once you arrive it's a 10 metre walk from the platform from the front door!

It's also easily accessible by road, sitting about half a mile from the A4113 into the nearest town of Knighton.

We are happy to have a single well behaved dog to stay, although please don't allow them into the upstairs/bedrooms of the cottage. We think the space at the cottage would be best suited to a small/medium dog.
Please be aware that the cottage garden is not enclosed and if dogs are left to run free they could get onto the road. If you want to get out and about, there are loads of great dog walks straight from the front door. We'll be happy to share route options when you're here, we have a black labrador and know which are her favourites.

Train heaven!
A lovely stay at Bucknell Station Cottage, just perfect for us (2 adults and 2 children). The kids loved staying in their room together and the wooden train set was a nice touch, going well with looking out the window as the big trains rolled past! Very well located for day trips in and around Shropshire as well as over the nearby border in to lovely Wales. Home made flapjacks greeting us on arrival were very well received! Thanks to Nina,Sam and family, a lovely space for a quiet break away.

Excellent stay
This property is the really nice cottage created by converting the ticket office and waiting room for Bucknell station. Location serves you well for exploring the towns and villages nearby and lovely views from the cottage itself. Very friendly host.

Lovely week spent in a charming railway cottage in beautiful scenery. Bucknell itself is a lovely, quiet village, and a great area for walking. Locally, Hopton Castle is particularly worth a visit. The hosts Nina and Sam were very welcoming, and the accommodation spacious and very well provided. The station itself is on a very quiet country railway with just 8 trains a day, which are very unobtrusive, but useful too. Really enjoyed my week at Bucknell, and plan to return in the future.

Unique property in quiet rural setting
This was our first family adventure from home and couldn't have wished for better. Lovely clean rooms that were plenty warm for February. Nina and Sam kindly supplied milk, tea and coffee and gorgeous homemade flapjacks although our criticism is there would never be enough 😉😊 The village was very quiet and provided a good base to explore. The trains do not run too frequently past and stop before 11pm. Would highly recommend a stay here.thank you Station Cottage for a lovely memory.

Lovely little find
This cottage is so sweet and in a great location - it was actually bigger than we expected! Little extras from the host and great communication. Great location for hiking direct from Bucknell or Long Mynd, as well as visiting Ludlow. All very clean and comfortable as well as being authentic! Thank you!

Perfect for train fans
You really could not find a better location for a train fan than this charming property. Worth noting that the garden area is open to the platform and road so you need to keep an eye on little ones. Inside was surprisingly quiet, a well equipped kitchen, pleasant living room with smart TV, and the beds were really comfy. The toy train track was a big hit too.

Cosy little quirky cottage.
Really cute little cottage. Kitchen well equipped for the size, bedrooms comfy. Despite the train line, train noise isn't a problem - in fact you get more noise from large vehicles on the road right out the door. Would be cramped for 4 adults, but overally a lovely place to stay with great countryside literally on your doorstep, and more easily access by car or the train.
