Once you've checked out all of the interesting attractions in Chitose, there's more to explore in the region. Grab the keys to a rental car, throw your bags in the trunk and get out there. These are some road trips you're sure to love:

• Head off to Ito for an excellent sightseeing experience. About 65 miles from Chitose, it's home to lots of cool attractions, including Izu Oceanic Park.
• Your next stop? It has to be Nagano, which is around 110 miles away. Nagano Olympic Stadium is one local draw card you really shouldn't miss.
• Venture into the great outdoors and appreciate the serenity at Shirotori Garden. It's 170 miles from Chitose.

If you don't possess a driver's license issued in Japan, then it's likely you'll need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your place of residence in order to rent a car. Also consider that if you do need an IDP, it has no validity on its own. You'll be asked to show your current driver's license your passport and other forms of documentation as well. Lastly, it's important that the credit card you used to book the rental vehicle matches the name on your license and passport. Some other things to note for international car rentals are:

• Age restrictions: You need to be 25 or over in most countries to rent a car. If you're younger, it may still be possible to rent a car but you'll have to pay a Young Driver's Surcharge. Additional restrictions may also apply to the types of cars you can rent.
• Driving limitations: Be sure to read the fine print before you drive off the lot. Typically, you can't cross country borders, drive on ferries or go off-roading with your rental car.
