Central Sonora

Travel Guide

A plaza with a circular fountain, benches, and outdoor seating areas.
A large white church with a bell tower and intricate architecture.
A classical building with ornate columns and a clock tower.
A statue on a pedestal, a pink building with arched windows, and parked cars on a street.
A gazebo with ornate metalwork and a wooden roof, surrounded by a staircase leading up to it.

Attractive beaches and archeological ruins, mountain trails, unspoiled nature reserves and watersports make this one of Mexico’s most appealing regions.

Central Sonora is the middle portion of Mexico’s second-largest state, encompassing gorgeous stretches of coastline, ecological preserves, mountains and the state capital. Spend long days on the beach, see protected wildlife, study archeological relics and go for mountain walks.

Embark on a sightseeing adventure by taking the Route of the Rio Sonora. This scenic course follows the Sonora River and passes through traditional towns, ecotourism attractions. You will travel past ranches and historic missions. The route starts on the Arizona border and finishes at Hermosillo, Sonora’s capital.

Stay in Hermosillo to appreciate architectural attractions such as the 19th-century cathedral and the State Government Palace. Nearby is the Plaza Zaragoza with an Arab-style kiosk from Florence, Italy. Peruse archeological artifacts at the Museum of Sonora and let the kids participate in science experiments at the Bubble Children’s Museum. Visit the downtown area for shopping, bars and restaurants. If you are feeling energetic, hike or bike along mountain trails near the city.

Explore nature at the Ecological Center of Sonora. This vast protected landscape contains hundreds of species of flora and fauna from the state’s four ecosystems: deserts, grasslands, mountains and the Sea of Cortez.

Find excellent beaches along the coastal regions of Central Sonora. San Carlos Bay is great for kayaking, Jet Skiing and snorkeling. The long, sandy expanses at Kino Bay have views of Shark Island, a large ecological reserve. Visit the island to see desert plant species and animals such as mule deer and bighorn sheep. About 120 miles (193 kilometers) south of Kino Bay is Guaymas. This busy port town is known for its pearl industry, shrimp dishes and massive parade held in the spring.

Central Sonora in northwestern Mexico is easy to reach by land or air. Hermosillo has its own international airport, or you can drive the 4-hour trip from Tucson, Arizona, or catch a bus. The most convenient way to explore Central Sonora’s sprawling attractions is to rent a car.
