The vast Pantanal wetlands, ecotourism centers and Brazil’s purpose-built capital city are some of the attractions you’ll find in this central region.

Brazil’s Central-West Region is the country’s geographical heart, spreading across the expansive Pantanal wetlands and the rugged landscapes of the Brazilian Highlands. It’s a region that showcases some incredible topography, so much so that large parts are dedicated UNESCO Natural World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves. Visit the Central-West Region to enjoy ecotourism activities, explore hiking trails and experience the charm of colonial towns.

Start your tour in the nation’s capital, the planned city of BrasíliaOpens in a new window, located in the Federal DistrictOpens in a new window. Spend time admiring its contemporary architecture and experience its culinary and nightlife scene. Escape the city bustle to swim in the natural pools and traverse hiking routes in Parque Nacional de Brasilia.

Get an introduction to the region’s natural beauty in the eastern Goiás state, which incorporates the Federal District. Go caving, climbing and trekking in Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Veadeiros and marvel at the magnificent Cachoeira do Itiquirá waterfall. Both are accessible on daytrips from Brasília. Wander the hilly cobblestone lanes of colonial Pirenópolis and the sleepy streets of UNESCO-protected Goiás Velho.

Experience the enormity of the Pantanal’s tropical wetlands, which cross the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do SulOpens in a new window. Gaze at awe-inspiring cascades and cliffs in Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Guimarães, in Mato Grosso. Cuiabá is Mato Grosso's capital, a burgeoning city peppered with colonial landmarks, galleries and museums.

Go to the region’s southernmost state, Mato Grosso do Sul, for some of Brazil’s finest ecotourism adventures. Just a short drive from BonitoOpens in a new window are ecological parks and rivers suitable for canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving and snorkeling. The hills of Serra da Bodoquena surround Bonito and are a bird-spotter’s paradise. Get up-close to the wetlands on tours from Corumbá and Coxim.

The vastness of the Central-West Region makes getting around time consuming. Fly to Brasília, from where long-distance buses depart for most tourist destinations. Campo Grande is the transport hub for Mato Grosso do Sul. From here you can extend your Brazilian vacation south into ParanáOpens in a new window, home of the glorious Iguaçu FallsOpens in a new window.
