Pleasant, newish hotel in Xining. All modern amenities. Unfortunately most of the staff spoke little or poor English leading to a couple of misunderstandings at times. Overal. Excellent stay

I've been to Xining many times and the Sofitel is the only hotel of this caliber in town. As of Feb 2016 at least, everything is still very new and the and this kind of 4-5 star hotel has finally arrived in what used to feel like such a distant outpost on the edge of the Tibetan plateau. The staff was very professional and Evin Xing was a big help organising a very early taxi for our departure and making sure things were taken care of. It's not in the center of town, but nothing is far and you...

It was just a 1 night stay. It is attached to the Sofitel and has free access to all the amenities there: gym, pool, sauna, spa, etc. I went to take advantage of the pool and spa. Had a wonderful full massage and facial. My only complaint was my stay was too short. I plan to return again.

The best area to stay in Chamalung is the central district around Chamalung Square, offering the most convenient access to amenities and local attractions.
This central area is the hub of activity in Chamalung, characterized by wide boulevards and a mix of modern and traditional architecture. Chamalung Square itself is a prominent landmark, often featuring public art installations and serving as a gathering point. Many of the city's key government buildings, larger hotels, and established restaurants are located within a few blocks of the square. It's a practical choice for solo travelers and business visitors who appreciate efficiency and proximity to services.
For those interested in experiencing the local culture and markets, the area stretching east from Chamalung Square towards the old city gates offers a more traditional experience. Here, you'll find narrower streets, smaller guesthouses, and a greater concentration of local eateries and craft shops.
When is the best time to go to Chamalung?
The best time to visit Chamalung is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is mild and most accessible.
During these months, the temperatures are comfortable for exploring the high-altitude landscapes and outdoor activities. This period also coincides with various local festivals, offering a glimpse into the Tibetan culture.
Travelers looking for comfortable conditions for sightseeing and outdoor adventures will find this period most suitable.
