With stunning views of the snowy surrounding mountains, this impressive tower is a symbol of the city’s budding prosperity in the Middle Ages.

City Tower is a gothic masterpiece rising from the heart of the historic center of Innsbruck. Initially attached to the old town hall, the tower has long been a key part of the cityscape. It stretches to a height of 150 feet (51 meters). Visit the City Tower and climb the 133 steps to the viewing deck at the top. Enjoy sweeping vistas of the rest of the city center and the Nordkette Mountain Range.

Arrive at the tower via the cobbled pedestrian street and notice how the gray stone of the tower contrasts with the red and yellow façades of the neighboring buildings. Plaques containing information about the site’s history mark the sides of an arched entrance in the middle of the tower.

Gaze up at the rectangular windows marking the center of the structure, leading up to an elegant clock displaying Roman numerals. Crowning the tower is a copper dome topped by a golden bauble.

Chat with a docent in the building about its history. Notice the barred windows that remain from a former town prison that was once installed here. From the viewing platform at the top, pick out some of your favorite nearby sights, including the impressive Inn Bridge.

The tower was constructed between 1442 to 1450. It was used until the 20th century by the Tower Guard, who announced the time to villagers and diligently watched for fires and attacks. The site is open daily from morning until evening. Purchase individual tickets to access the tower, which operates year round.

City Tower stands in the heart of the old town district of Innsbruck. It is near the southeastern corner of a bend in the Inn River. Ride a bus to a nearby stop and walk along a pedestrian street to get here. While you’re here, visit other surrounding treasures such as the Golden Roof, the Hofburg Imperial Palace and St. Anne’s Column.
