Marvel at colonial-era landmarks, shop at an artisan market and relax at an outdoor café at this historic square in Montevideo’s Old Town.

Constitution Square (Plaza Constitución) is an architecturally impressive and historically significant square in Montevideo’s atmospheric Old Town. This is the place to spot centuries-old buildings bequeathed by Spanish colonists. Browse antique and handicraft stalls or enjoy the square’s ambiance from a café terrace.

Start your visit in the square’s center by admiring the ornate fountain adorned with expertly carved cherubs. Looming over the square’s west side is the 18th-century Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral. Step inside to discover beautiful stained-glass windows, a mosaic floor and the tombs of revered national figures, such as military leader Juan Antonio Lavalleja.

On the opposite side of the square is the elegant neoclassical-style Montevideo Cabildo. It dates back to the early 1800s. Uruguay’s first constitution was signed here in 1830, which marked the end of a 19-year battle for independence. Today, it houses the free Cabildo Historical Museum. See exhibits of artwork, maps and photos plus live music performances showcasing varying aspects of Montevideo’s history and Uruguayan culture.

Visit Constitution Square on a weekend when local artisans and collectors come to sell their wares. Find everything from antiques, books and china to jewelry, leather goods and toys. Try bargaining with the vendors to bring the prices down.

After seeing the square’s attractions, take a break at the outdoor seating areas of a café. Order a coffee, cold drink or glass of Uruguayan wine. Sample a chivito, a sandwich filled with thinly sliced beef, grilled cheese and lettuce, among other toppings.

Constitution Square is a short walk from other major city attractions. These include Independence Square, Solís Theater and the Port Market. Enjoy a stroll along Calle Sarandi, a pedestrian-only street lined with bars, restaurants, retail outlets and market stalls. Several public buses and a hop-on, hop-off tourist bus stop close to the square.

Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral is open daily. Montevideo Cabildo and the Cabildo Historical Museum are open from Monday to Saturday. Find more information on the museum’s official website.
