'As Happy as God In France' at La Chartreuse du Maine, unique estate in Dordogne

LA CUISINE D'ALICE
La Cuisine d’Alice is a stylish one bedroom cottage on the grounds of the French country estate known as La Chartreuse du Maine. When you enter La Cuisine d’Alice, you step into a spacious room (600 square feet) with high ceilings and beautiful limestone walls. The sunny, modern kitchen has a window overlooking the courtyard of the château, where a table and chairs and two lounge chairs invite you to dine al fresco or sit in the sun. The living room has a table and chairs for dining inside, as well as a comfortable leather sofa and armchair facing the large wood burning fireplace. As you step up four stone stairs, you are in the master bedroom featuring a brand-new King-size bed made with fine linen sheets. The stone walls of your bedroom are of warm beige local limestone. The sunny private bathroom features a large modern bathtub/shower and a dormer window facing a peaceful pasture field.

LA CHARTREUSE DU MAINE:
La Cuisine d'Alice is one of the three independent holiday homes located in the grounds of Le Maine, an early 18th century delightful Chartreuse. Here everything breathes peace, harmony and beauty. Located in the centre of the Dordogne region, La Chartreuse du Maine is the perfect relaxing base to experience France, get to know the Dordogne, go in search of 350,000 years of history of mankind, discover local gastronomy and wines, and enjoy an easy way of life in a peaceful, bucolic atmosphere.
The estate of La Chartreuse du Maine encompasses 67 acres of gardens, meadows and woods with many pathways, on the edge of the peaceful village of Cubjac. Within Le Maine you will enjoy relaxing in a lounge chair by the sunny swimming pool that overlooks the estate.

THE VILLAGE OF CUBJAC:
The shady tree-lined entrance to La Chartreuse du Maine is on the outskirts of the village of Cubjac, which is in the Dordogne region on the banks of the peaceful Auvezere River. You can easily walk to the village center for a drink at a local café or to do your shopping at the local bakery and general store. There is even a farmers’ market on Fridays with fresh local produce all year round, and hand-made regional crafts for sale in summer.

THE REGION AND 'PÉRIGORDINE LIFESTYLE':
It is not pure coincidence that man has been living in this paradise for over 350 000 years. When strolling alone in the superb unspoilt countryside you can just imagine why. Often, mostly in low season, you might catch yourself thinking the Dordogne has not changed at all. The joy of holidays in Dordogne is that nowadays you still can fully indulge in that ‘simple art de vivre’ which all these cultural and historical sites speak of. The Dordogne is synonymous with gastronomy and life in Perigord revolves around markets, recipes, seasons of mushrooms, truffles, foie-gras, walnuts, goat cheese, strawberries, wine harvest. Everybody here has a kitchen garden to grow their own preferred vegetable varieties. Every woman has her old secret recipes, a family heritage.

Highly recommend
We are an Australian couple travelling in France and were so happy we had chosen this amazing property located on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Cubjac. The whole property is very beautiful and our accommodation was the same, just perfect, everything required was present and of top quality. The bed was extremely comfortable with lovely linen and towels. The hosts Catherine and Maxence were totally obliging at every opportunity to ensure our stay was the best it could possibly be.

A slice of heaven!
We absolutely adored staying at Le Maine. It was truly a slice of heaven. To see the beautiful driveway leading up to the main house and beyond to the cottages was such a sight for sore eyes as we had flown from Calgary to Montreal to Paris to Bordeaux and drove for 2 hours east from Bordeaux. We were absolutely exhausted. The photos do not do this place justice. It is so beautiful! Catherine and Maxence are delightful and helpful. They definitely want you to enjoy yourselves and their gorgeous property. If you are considering staying at this property, I would highly encourage you to say yes, yes, yes!! We will back!

Perfect Stay in a perfect location.
Cuisine de Alice was even better than the photos and the description indicated. That in combination with perfect hosts and Maxence's magic map allowed us a wonderful fortnight in the second half of September. We'll definitely try to come back.

A perfect place in Perigord
We had a wonderful week in Cuisine D'Alice. The pictures on the website make it look lovely and in reality it's even better. The cottage itself is beautifully presented with very careful, tasteful attention to detail and comfort. It has its own garden which is very private and much larger than we expected with sunny spots, shade, and a range of garden furniture. The wider grounds include swathes of lavender and herbs and vegetables and an array of plants in pots as well as acres of woodland. The roses weren't in flower when we were there but must be fabulous. We enjoyed the pool every day. It's clean, well appointed and large enough to swim in, rather than simply cooling off (although it's great for that too!) Cubjac is pretty. It's small but has a great bakery, and a little market on a Friday. We booked a canoeing trip through the local campsite, which was fun. You really need a car to explore the area and there are lots of interesting places within easy reach. Hautefort and St Jean de Cole particularly stick in the memory. For a restful, peaceful, memorable and magical holiday, I'd have no hesitation in recommending Cuisine D'Alice. Catherine and Maxence, with their supporting cast of various animals, are perfect hosts.

Best ever
I frequently travel and stay in VRBO properties. This one is the best one in my experience. Beautifully decorated, comfortable, with everything I needed to prepare meals with produce from local farmer's markets. It is peaceful, quiet, yet near so many wonderful local attractions and historical sites. The owners are delightful and welcomed me with a bottle of wine, walnut bread from the local bakery, local goat cheese, fresh strawberries and a bouquet of flowers. I knew from the 1st day that I wouldn't want to leave when the week was up. Will be returning.

A wonderful experience
We had an amazing stay at Le Maine in September. The Cuisine d’Alice was a joy -- large, and beautifully and thoughtfully decorated. It had a well-equipped kitchen that we often used to eat the wonderful prepared foods we bought in the nearby town of Périgueux. We had our own large private garden area where we sat whenever we could and where we were often joined by Bibi, the delightful resident cat. We admired the beautiful landscaping and walked in the woods on the estate, making friends with Zebulon the donkey. Catherine and Maxence were excellent and congenial hosts, helping us with suggestions about places to go and making impeccable restaurant recommendations. We marvelled at everything we saw in the Dordogne in our 12 days there. From caves to fabulous gardens to beautiful towns to museums, there was no shortage of opportunities to admire and learn. Our visits to Lascaux and Rocamadour were highlights of our stay. Last but not least were the people we encountered, who were friendly, inquisitive and engaging.

Perfect property
We stayed at La Cuisine d'Alice from 13-25 August. This charming property was clean and comfortable with lots of lovely individual touches. The cottage is much more spacious than it looks on the website photographs. It has its own outside seating area which was ideal for enjoying quiet meals. The surrounding grounds were extensive and well kept, as was the lovely swimming pool. Catherine and Maxence were charming and discreet hosts. We thoroughly recommend this property.

We did not want to leave!
Had an amazing relaxing stay for a week. La Cuisine d'Alice was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. Catherine and Maxence's warm welcome was very appreciated and their helpful advice throughout the stay was invaluable. We loved the pool and woodland walks as well as the resident cat and donkey. We feel that we have only just scratched the surface of this beautiful part of France and as La Cuisine d'Alice had everything we could ever wish for we will be returning.

Excellent experience at the farmhouse and a great location in the Perigord
Overall a wonderful experience at Le Maine. Our hosts were kind, gracious and most helpful in exploring the area. The facilities were immaculate and well equipped. The grounds are fantastic with an outdoor pool, but we enjoyed most was the hiking/running trails on the property (to work off the foi gras, truffles, duck confit, cheese and wine). We loved the donkey and cat on the property. The small town of Cubjac is sleepy but has one of the best boulangeries in the region. The property is within a 30 minute drive to Perigeaux. Overall, we very highly recommend this property if you are looking for an off beaten path escape with a great central location as a base to explore this region of France.
