Both stylish and grounded, the District of Great Peace features upscale department stores and serene parks existing beside lively night markets.

Visit Daan to explore a popular neighborhood at the heart of Taipei, known for its interconnecting commercial avenues and leafy parks. Its traditional religious buildings and night markets reveal old Taiwan, while the universities and modern stores present the future.

Get a glimpse into the local culture and customs with a trip through the markets. On weekends, inspect the stones and gems gracing the stalls of the indoor Jianguo Flower and Jade Market. Baskets filled with glimmering pendants and spiritual sculptures line the tables.

If you prefer to shop at the higher end, browse the upscale sections of the Pacific Sogo Fuxing Store, where the world’s most iconic brands are sold.

Enjoy a break from shopping with a trip to the vast Daan Forest Park, which has drawn comparisons with New York’s Central Park. Considered the Lungs of Taipei City, it has a scenic lake where ducks and turtles roam.

Head southeast to Fuyang Eco Park, a former military ammunition warehouse that is today engulfed by flourishing vegetation. Visit its Butterfly Watching Area and Taipei Tree Frog Observation Area, among other fascinating zones.

As evening falls, the night markets dominate as an important part of Taiwanese culture. Wander through the lively lanes of the Shida Night Market for the range of local gastronomic surprises as well as discounted clothing. A little east is the Tong Hua Night Market, where you can try such exotic delicacies as stinky tofu, pork blood cake and steam fried buns.

Find the neighborhood wrapping around the western side of central Taipei. Ride a metro or bus to Daan Station and walk around the area. Take the time to discover the adjacent districts of Songshan, Datong and Wanhua.

Daan manages to radiate both an exclusive and a down-to-earth vibe, with its range of markets and stores. The name of the area can be translated to Great Peace.

Good place to stay
"Good places to spend a few days if you are on a budget and look for somewhere decent in a good location. Two things might upset you: 1. Their wifi signal can be weak if you are in your room (I stayed in single bedroom for man). 2. You might be disturbed by all door closing sounds outside."
