It is named after Dr Edward Orton, Sr. who served as Ohio State's first president, OSU Professor of Geology from 1873 to 1899, and Ohio's State Geologist from 1882 until his death in 1899. Orton Hall is built of 40 different Ohio building stones. In the outside walls, these stones are laid in stratigraphic order according to their relative positions in Ohio's bedrock. The only non-indigenous to Ohio stone used is Indiana Limestone to build the front steps. It was chosen because of its high concentration of embedded fossils. The bell tower was dedicated in 1915 and contains 25,000 pounds of bells that can be heard regularly tolling across campus. The pool area had broken furniture and was covered in pine needles—we ended up cleaning it ourselves. The home did not appear thoroughly cleaned: we found mouse droppings, cobwebs, dirty dishes, crumbs, and leftover items from previous guests. A promised cleaning crew never showed.The grill was unusable due to debris and storage items inside as was the screened in porch due to a missing screen panel, lights that wouldn't turn off, and tons of bugs. There were plumbing issues, inconsistent water pressure, and odors from the kitchen sink. The kids’ room had no light. We also dealt with a fruit fly problem and lost Wi-Fi our last night which impacted bedtime routine.While we enjoyed the pool and hot tub (after some troubleshooting), we would not stay here again or recommend it until the property is better maintained.
