Get a unique glimpse into Muskogee’s rich Native American heritage at this art gallery and history museum housed in a beautiful little building.

Muskogee’s strong Native American character is captivatingly showcased at the Five Civilized Tribes Museum. Visit this charming museum to view a regularly rotating selection of art exhibits and historical artifacts. Learn all about the past and present of the five tribes that defined this part of Oklahoma: the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole tribes.

Admire the outside of this picturesque building with its elegant pillars and think about its long history. The museum has been housed here since 1966, but the building’s important role in Native American affairs dates back to its construction in 1875. It was built as the Union Indian Agency building, the first central point from which the affairs of the five tribes would be managed. At other points in its history it has been a music venue, as well as an orphanage and school.

Step inside the entrance and explore the collections, where you will learn about the tribes’ strong connection to the local area. The banks of the nearby Arkansas River have historically been home to traditional tribal burial mounds. In the downstairs galleries find out more about the many other ways the five tribes have left their influence on this area. Fascinating personal, ceremonial and archeological artifacts offer insight into the traditions of the tribes. Head upstairs to browse other historical displays as well as an ever-changing array of Native American art. Works on display include paintings and sculptures by artists such as Solomon McCombs, Jerome Tiger, Terry Saul and many more.

The Five Civilized Tribes Museum is open daily except Sundays and public holidays, although it has reduced hours on Saturdays. It has a small admission fee. Find the museum at the edge of beautiful Honor Heights Park, one of the most scenic areas of Muskogee. This lovely park offers the perfect backdrop to the museum. It is the site of the annual Azalea Festival, when huge blooms take over the entire park with their irresistible colors and fragrance.
