The Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex opened in 1887 and is best known for the Victorian Theatre that lies at the heart of the building. This was once part of the much larger Town Hall, which was demolished when structural problems were discovered. The theatre, however, remains and it is the jewel in the crown of this stunning cultural complex.
The best way to see the theatre is to take a tour. Your guide will take you through the halls filled with photographs of historical performances. Don’t miss the ancient mechanisms that raise and lower the stage curtains. You will very likely encounter a rehearsal or performance during your visit as well. Take a seat in the stalls and enjoy the play just as the Victorian gentry would have over 100 years ago.
Make sure you tour the rest of the complex. In the Art Gallery, you will see work by nationally and internationally acclaimed Indian artists. Watch a performance in the impressive outdoor amphitheatre or simply explore the building and admire the many original Victorian features.
The Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex is open on weekdays. There is a small charge for entry and some performances may have an additional charge. The complex is located along Mall Road in the centre of Shimla. Walk along Shimla Mall and discover other fascinating sites, including Christ Church, one of the oldest churches in northern India.
