Historic 2 Story Hand-Hewn Log Cabin Next to Yellowstone Park

Riverfront cabin with kitchen and patio
Winner of the 2010 Historic Restoration Award from the Montana Historical Alliance , this rare 2 story hand-hewn square log cabin was built in 1907. Austrians used Broad Axes to fashion unbelievable 'compound' dovetail corners locking the logs in place for over 100 years.
The address of the cabin is: 25 Papesh Road, Gardiner, Montana if you want to Google Map it's location.
It is a short 5 MINUTE drive to the North Entrance of Yellowstone Park.

The cabin sits on 42 quiet acres once called 'The Little Trail Creek Ranch.' It once fed tourists in Yellowstone Park. It is only 4 miles north of Gardiner,Montana and the north entrance to Yellowstone. The cabin is not visible from the highway, and has lots of grass, trees and water. Out front sit the mountains of Yellowstone Park and the Yellowstone River. In the back is the Absaroka Wilderness. The old tree stumps that built the cabin are still visible up the cliffs behind the house.

Herds of Elk, Bison,Deer and Bighorn Sheep use our land all year due to the trees and open water from abundant springs.

We like to go to 'The Boiling River' - one of the best natural hot springs in the world! We were married there 26 years ago, and still go with the kids whenever we can. It is only 7 miles from our door, and it's free once inside Yellowstone Park. The spring is closed May and part of June due to high water, but Chico Hot Springs is 22 miles north, and it has wonderful food. On Sunday, you can eat the brunch and swim for free.

For 13 years we fixed up the cabin. It was fun. There are all new appliances, a 6 burner stove with convection oven, new electric and plumbing, and heating. We used antiques and old wood salvaged from train stations and hotels where needed. The old wood in the cabin has a certain 'glow' that comes from age.

During the renovation, I found many items I put into the chinking. Pocket watches, coins, buttons, even a gun--and 3 bullets in the logs [all at waist high level].

There is a steam shower for use in winter. A 4000 pound Tulikivi wood stove [for use only in winter] uses radiant heat to warm the cabin. It is made of soapstone, which will stay warm a full 2 days after a fire.

There is one bedroom downstairs, and 3 upstairs. A double bed is in the sun room, and the couch downstairs in the Tulikivi room is oddly comfortable for sleeping.
So, if you appreciate the Real Deal -- with history, wildlife, quiet and nature-- welcome to our cabin. You'll find our circle of trees cool and refreshing even on the hottest day.

Eclectic and Cozy
Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this rustic and well-equipped cabin. The Sirrs were wonderful contacts and hosts providing us with not only everything a vacationer to a new area could require, but also were extremely gracious when we thought we may need to make changes to our stay (changes that might have effected the cost). We appreciate their understanding and working with us; luckily our plans came through as originally expected! Again, we appreciate their graciousness and understanding—especially as we had to plan so far in advance and situations arise. The location to Yellowstone NP as well as Gardiner; Livingston; and the smaller communities of Emigrant and Pray, was ideal. We wanted for nothing—especially not for views! The cabin was absolutely charming—the antiques and attention to detail surpassed what we expected. We look forward to replicating some of these functional pieces in our own home (ex. the built in shoe scraper on the side porch). The home was furnished comfortably and supplied with every manner of pot, pan, dish, mug, utensil, blanket, quilt, pillow, and towel so that the weary traveler need not remember to bring anything more than their own clothing and groceries! Wild elk greeted us each morning from the front yard and an otter family played cheerfully in the small pond on site. The 46 acres that the property sits on was not as accessible nor as remote as we initially imagined—but we enjoyed our evenings around the backyard campfire just the same and rarely saw any of the neighbors during our stay. We hope to return to this cabin in the future—we know other family members would love the experience just as we did. PS: we were traveling with only one person who was physically unable to make it to the upstairs bedrooms. While the stairs were not difficult for any other members of our party, it may help to know that there is only one true bedroom downstairs (not including the pull out sofas in the main living room) for those who may be traveling with multiple people who are not able to make it up stairs. Best regards, The Stewarts Yellowstone Family Trip 2021

Wow a great property and even greater hosts
We loved our stay there. It was warm in the cabin. And a very special and unique place. We loved the decor the views. Close to the small town and close to the park entrance. Book this place and make great memories. The kids loved it here.

Step Back In Time
As you sit in a rocking chair on the front porch of this log cabin you can just imagine what it was like living here over a hundred years ago. You look out over the Yellowstone River towards the mountains that boast snow in their crevices. Some mornings we enjoyed elk in the front yard. This home was lovingly restored honoring its first family. Memorabilia found during the restoration was reintroduced into the property by installing in the chinking and logs. Framed pictures and historical articles helped introduce us to the first family. In the midst of all this history the home itself is amazingly comfortable. Fabulous kitchen with a stunning gas stove, dishwasher, etc.. everything you will need for your stay, including surround sound and the most amazing VCR movie library. The log cabin is clean, clean, clean. A shower on the first floor and claw foot tub on the second floor serve all four bedrooms. The cabin is light and airy and the property is charming to walk. After visiting Yellowstone daily and dinners in Gardiner we would walk the driveway down to the Yellowstone River to see the elk. This is a property you will never forget.

Wonderful experience
We started our vacation with four days at this lovely home. Four adults and three kids loved spending time here. We cooked and played games and did a puzzle. It was the perfect place for a home base to enjoy Yellowstone.
