Admire some repurposed old military buildings, dine in style or go for a canal-side walk through this compact suburb of Hannover.

Vahrenwald has a history dating back to the 12th century, but the suburb has moved with the times to be a trendy inner-city addition to the city of Hannover.

Begin your visit to Vahrenwald at the central Vahrenwalder Platz. This modern transportation hub and retail area is a good place for shopping. Have a meal or drinks in a café before taking the short walk north from Vahrenwalder Platz to the more enchanting Vahrenwalder Park area. The park itself has a pleasant lawn surrounded by trees, a nice spot for picnics. Let the kids run around in the playground or take them to the indoor pool or library beside the park.

Wander over to the Royal Riding Hall, the large brick building beside the park. Constructed in 1876, this impressive building was used for training the men and horses of the Prussian Military Riding School. Today the hall houses businesses and an events center. Check the calendar on the hall’s website to see if anything of interest is on during your stay.

Head east of the park to find the ornate Sankt Joseph Kirche. This Catholic church dates back to 1912, but needed considerable restoration after being damaged during World War II. The sturdy and rugged exterior of the church belies the simple, yet elegant interior.

Time your visit to Vahrenwald to catch the weekly market held in Jahnplatz. The stalls that fill the square offer some good opportunities to try typically German snacks and buy fresh produce from the region. Take a seat beneath one of the trees to soak up the community atmosphere.

Stretch your legs with a walk beside the Mittelland Canal, which follows the northern edge of Vahrenwald. Pleasant pathways run beside the tree-lined canal.

Head back to the center of Vahrenwald where, beside the Royal Riding School, you will find the converted stables, now home to modern businesses. Treat yourself to a meal at a restaurant in one of these repurposed buildings. The locals will agree: there really is no better way to finish off your afternoon in Vahrenwald.
