Jeongdongjin Beach is known for its stunning sunrises, which are best viewed from the top of Mount Goseongsan. Rise early in the morning and climb to the top of this hill to join the other tourists and locals who often gather here to start the day. Stand at the pretty Yeongin Pavilion located atop the hill to watch the sun come up. Afterward, head back down toward the beach and spend a few hours relaxing and enjoying its golden sand and blue waters.
The beach itself is about 820 feet (250 meters) long. Walk its length and watch the waves during the winter or go for a swim in the warmer months. Rent beach umbrellas and sun loungers here, go out on the water in a tube and rinse off afterward at the on-site showers. Jeongdongjin station is a little train station right on the beach. It is known for being the closest railway station to the ocean, anywhere in the world.
Another hilltop location near the beach is the distinctive Sun Cruise Resort. Shaped like a giant cruise liner and perched on a hilltop, it is unmistakable. Stay overnight here if you feel like treating yourself or simply come in during the day and enjoy some tea at the rotating café. Allow extra time in your schedule to wander through the sculpture park at the foot of the hill.
Arrive at Jeongdongjin Beach in the early evening to leave time to get some sleep before waking early to see the sunrise. From Seoul, reach this lovely spot in about 4 hours by public transportation.
