While in Gangneung, plan a trip to visit Jeongdongjin Sculpture Park, a grassy square of artworks with gorgeous views of the East Sea. In addition to its array of statues and other public works of art, the park is known for its excellent sunrise views. Take photos of the intriguing sculptures, framed by the deep blue sky and sea.
Make your way through the large green park to study the various sculptures. Lay out picnic supplies beside the pond to enjoy with your family or friends in this serene setting. Tour guides and docents from the hotel can take you around the park and explain individual works in greater detail. Explore the grounds and pick out some of your favorites from the pieces on display.
The sculptures include a giant set of hands and an array of historical figures. Try to understand the symbolism of more abstract and post-modern works, many of which are made up of parts of bodies embracing one another. Stroll along a bridge in the center of a pond that is lined by statues partially submerged by water.
For a diverse range of scenic views, hop aboard the Jeongdongjin Sunrise Tourist Train, which has been operating since 1997. Wander along neighboring Jeongdongjin Beach and go for a refreshing swim in the East Sea.
The park is part of the Sun Cruise Resort & Yacht Hotel, which is shaped like a giant boat. From the adjacent park or beach spot this immense boat-shaped hotel on top of a cliff. Entrance is free to its guests and requires a fee from non-staying members of the public.
Jeongdongjin Sculpture Park is in its namesake town, which occupies the eastern outskirts of Gangneung. Travel by train to the Jeongdongjin Station and cross the beach and park to reach these artistic grounds. Make your way through the area to see some of its other sights, such as Hourglass Park and the Jeongdongjin Time Museum.
