The weather during my stay at RStar was at 0C. The staff issued me a lower bunk next to a single pane glass window. my area was damp and cold. i reported the problem but the management refused to issue me a interior space. while trying to get warmer, i discovered the cloth curtain next to my bed have BLACK MOLE growing on it; place see images. Needless to say the damp, cold room with black mole can not be good for anyone. VERY DISPOINTED with my stay because i got ill because of it.
However, a staff lady name NADDI offer excellent service even not of of issues were resolved by management.
Very well located to catch the subway or to walk to Kyoto train station to use different train lines or buses.Convenience stores and dining options nearby. Breakfast is limited to sliced bread. Guests are not always quiet at night. The hostel provides only one large towel and slippers, so plan accordingly to bring a face cloth and another towel, as needed.
This hostel was really nice! The staff were super helpful. I appreciated how there was luggage storage before and after check in/check out. The location is also very nice, one subway stop from Kyoto station, and quite easy/accessible to major bus stations and attraction. I walked 25 mins from the hostel to Kiyomizu-dera temple and the famous alleyways nearby - very walkable distances to major sites (if you like to walk!). The breakfast had no vegan options, which is where I'd dock a star. Even if they offered fruit, that would have been nice but unfortunately no options. They do have a very nice cafeteria with lots of amenities so you can utilize this space. Would definitely recommend and return! Thank you!
Great place. Quiet surroundings, but still close to transportation! Comfortable beds, didn’t use the common area so know nothing about them. The people working in the reception was so nice!
This hostel beats any hotel/ hostel I’ve stayed it. It is well worth the value. Lockers are spacious, staff is friendly and hard working, the amenities like breakfast, towels, slippers and laundry are a great touch. beds are spacious and comfy and I like that there was a designated smoking area on the premises. The only thing is the internet is a bit wonky but overall amazing stay!
We had a family of 4 stay in a room with a double bunk bed and it had a small table in the room. Each bed had outlets close by and adequate space. Clothes hanging rack was nice to hang rain coats to dry off. 2nd floor common eating area was nice to have a place to eat and store food. Small market across the street for easy access for purchases. Very close to train station for walking and large shopping area within a mile.

Mixed Feelings About a Return Stay — Disappointed by Hospitality Standards
We decided to book this accommodation again because of a previous one-night stay that was genuinely excellent. The bed was the most comfortable of our entire trip, and that positive memory made us return without hesitation. However, this second experience left us with a very different impression.
The Good:
The staff made some effort to communicate using Google Translate, which we appreciated.
The Disappointing:
The room we initially wanted was shown as unavailable during the entire planning period — despite checking several times. Yet upon arrival, it had 3 available rooms online, priced at HALF of what we had paid for, a different, less desirable room (capsule pods).
We asked the staff if there was a way to switch rooms or find a middle ground, especially since the pricing difference was so stark. Despite understanding the booking clause (non-refundable), it was disappointing that there was no willingness whatsoever to offer any flexibility, refund, or adjustment — even though it was evident we were now paying DOUBLE the current rate.
The staff’s response felt rigid and impersonal. Instead of hospitality, the encounter felt transactional. The staff member had to call someone to handle the situation, but still delivered a firm no — without offering other room alternatives (despite better and cheaper options being available, such as a private room with a private bathroom).
What’s more troubling is
The staff is amazing, very helpful. The room was fine but lacking a place to put your luggage on or even just to sit. Only beds in the room which were comfortable. I would stay again. It was worth the price.
It was my first time solo traveling but this place felt safe and welcoming. Rooms and bathrooms were nice and clean. Totally would book again next time I come back!
The property is located a short walk from the station, and is fully air conditioned. It advertises a “full breakfast” but in reality it’s just bread and jams, not a full continental breakfast, so be careful of that. You’re provided with a fairly large lock box for your valuables and the bedding is very soft.
Very foreigner friendly. The front desk speaks English and they are able to accommodate any issue you may have. Their breakfast is delicious bread! They wash the dishes so you put them in the sink afterwards. The location is perfect too, everything is within a decent train ride distance. Overall, I would definitely stay again and recommend to others.
First time staying in a hostel and I was very pleasantly surprised. I booked a room for four adults with a private bathroom. It was very clean and quite comfortable. We only needed a bed for one night so worked out good. Not to get from Kyoto station - we walked to the hotel.
Several minutes late to returning to room to check out and staff had already entered the room and left the door open while personal belongings were still in the room. We were advised to move our personal belongings into the locker downstairs for safekeeping and upon return back to the hotel to pick up belongings we found our lockers empty and staff had removed our luggage and put them into a room with informing us or asking for consent to do so. Huge invasions of personal space and disrespect to one’s privacy.
nothing particularly wrong with the place but the other people were super noisy every night between 12am-7am people are still constantly coming in and out of room the door is loud, and people unziping suitcases, and turning lights on. Quiet hour was supposed to start after 11pm was not the case.
