Visit The Hill to discover one of Newcastle’s earliest settled areas. This sought-after neighborhood is within walking distance or short drives of spectacular beaches, along with Darby Street’s dining and nightlife venues. Enjoy the central location while exploring historic landmarks framed by ocean views.

Christ Church Cathedral fills the skyline and captures the imagination with its rich history. Discover the stories of the church standing tall despite a Japanese submarine attack of the city and an earthquake. Overlooking the city, the site has hosted pilgrims and worshippers for more than 200 years. The cathedral also houses Newcastle’s War Memorial and Memorabilia.

Part of the Newcastle Memorial Walk, the Anzac Memorial Bridge opened in 2015 to honor the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli Anzac landing. Stroll across the bridge to a viewing platform for panoramic coastal photos. Along the walkway, look for steel silhouettes of soldiers and the names of people who served during World War I.

Keep walking toward a staircase connecting the memorial walk to Bathers Way. This pathway is a walker’s dream along the cliffs, with easy access to Newcastle’s famous beaches, including Nobbys Beach and Merewether Beach. Stop for refreshing swims and meals at beachfront restaurants or enjoy ice cream while burying your feet in the white sand.

Watch for The Obelisk, one of the city’s oldest navigational aids, historically used to guide sailors on the approach to Newcastle’s port. It’s hard to miss, no matter where you are along the coastal walk and in The Hill neighborhood. The iconic landmark is surrounded by parklands with beautiful views encompassing the ocean and the city.

Fly into the domestic Newcastle Airport or Sydney International Airport. Newcastle is just over 2 hours from Sydney Airport by car. Easy connections include private transfers, shuttle buses, trains and public buses.

The Hill is a walkable area with many nearby attractions. Newcastle offers efficient public transportation, with a light rail system, buses and taxis for travelling around this iconic city.
