A suspension bridge stretches across a deep gorge in this park, where you’ll find a picturesque lake and a rich history.

Widespread forests, crumbling cliffs and dramatic waterfalls paint an unforgettable vision of nature in Tallulah Gorge State Park. Its namesake gorge runs through the middle of the mountainous topography, providing dizzying views from its swaying suspension bridge. Brave yourself for the rise to the tops of the cliffs to appreciate the spectacular views.

Stroll along the precipices and gaze into the abyss of the gorge, which stretches across roughly 2 miles (3 kilometers) of rolling terrain. The gorge is almost 1,000 feet (300 meters) deep, so take care as you stroll along the peaks.

Make your way across the rickety suspension bridge to feel like you’re floating above the drop. Your pulse will quicken as you view the awe-inspiring vistas from midway across this swinging conduit.

Walk or cycle along a paved path that follows an abandoned railroad bed. You can also take your mountain bike on a 10-mile (16-kilometer) trail. As you walk along the trails that meander in and out of the forest, lift rocks to try to find a protected green salamander. Enjoy a meal at the picnic shelter and let your kids frolic in one of the two playgrounds.

Make your vacation base in the town of Tallulah Falls, where you’ll find the Tallulah Falls Baptist Church and the Tallulah Point Overlook. Sleep beneath the stars in the Terrora Campground. Visit the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center to learn about the history of the area, which was once a Victorian resort town. Pick up a permit for free access to the gorge floor.

Find Tallulah Gorge State Park in the northeastern corner of Georgia. It is just east of Chattahoochee National Forest and southeast of Nantahala National Forest. Drive northeast from Atlanta for 90 miles (145 kilometers) to get here in roughly 90 minutes.

Explore the region for some of its surrounding treasures, such as Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Pisgah National Forest and the city of Athens.
