One of Phnom Penh’s hippest neighborhoods is marked by references to the country’s long past, amid expat-friendly shops and restaurants.

Something is always happening in Boeung Keng Kang, the most cosmopolitan area of Cambodia’s capital. Long inhabited by a mix of Cambodians and foreigners, the neighborhood has become a hotspot for locals and tourists.

Get a hotel in Boeung Keng Kang for easy access to the sights of central Phnom Penh, with a fair amount of nightlife as well. Travel to its southern areas for quiet residential spaces, ideal for visiting families. It is easy to feel at home here after just a few days.

Browse through vintage clothing and accessories from across Asia in the stalls of the Boeung Keng Kang Market, a unique gem in the well-developed network of Phnom Penh shopping establishments. Purchase souvenirs and lunch at the Tuol Tom Poung Market.

Walk through the riverfront Samdech Hun Sen Park and follow the grassy fields inland to the Independence Monument, a 65-foot (20-meter) tower from 1958 that celebrates the country’s independence from France. Get spiritual insight and a sense of Cambodian religious practice at the gilded Wat Langka, one of Phnom Penh’s oldest temples. Appreciate the darker elements of Cambodia’s recent past with a visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, located in a former Khmer Rouge prison, a sobering reminder of what Cambodians have suffered.

Find Boeung Keng Kang in central Phnom Penh, south of the neighborhood of Daun Penh. As the home of much of the capital’s expatriates, it has well-developed public infrastructure, including a bus line along its central axis. Drive here in less than 20 minutes from Phnom Penh International Airport or 10 minutes from the central rail station or ferry dock. Rent a tuk tuk or motorcycle, available on many major streets.

Wake up early in the morning and journey to the National Olympic Stadium, built in the 1960s to host an international competition that never happened here. Join a class or walk in the cool morning air as locals from Boeung Keng Kang get in their daily exercise or dance.
